The Insurance Bureau of Canada has released a list of the most stolen cars in Canada. The 1999 and 2000 Honda Civic SiR takes the top spot as the most stolen car. No surprise there. It is surprising, however, to see Volkswagen represented on the list. The fifth stolen car, according to the bureau, is the 1993 Volkswagen Corrado. Perhaps this is understandable as the Corrado did not have an immobilizer system as standard equipment. Sadly, it doesn't end there. Volkswagen is once again represented as the ninth most stolen vehicle with the 1999 Volkswagen Golf GTI. Now this is a bit more puzzling as the 1999 Golf GTI already had an immobilizer system as standard equipment.
The bureau says this list is based on actual insurance claims collected from almost all automobile insurance companies in Canada. They further commented that the vehicles making the top ten did not have a bureau-approved immobilizer system.
Top ten stolen vehicles:
1. 2000 Honda Civic SiR two-door.
2. 1999 Honda Civic SiR two-door.
3. 1996 four-wheel-drive Chevrolet/GMC Blazer/Jimmy S Series two-door.
4. 1994 Honda Civic Si hatchback two-door.
5. 1993 Volkswagen Corrado two-door.
6. 1995 Honda Civic Si hatchback two-door.
7. 1992 Chrysler Voyager and Dodge Caravan.
8. 2002 all-wheel-drive Subaru Impreza WRX four-door.
9. 1999 Volkswagen Golf GTI hatchback two-door.
10. 1993 Honda Civic Si hatchback two-door.
