Volkswagen of America has issued a recall for all Jettas from 1999 through 2002 and New Beetles from 1998 through 2002. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 362,000 Jettas and New Beetles will be recalled due to a malfunction in these model's brake lights. The NHTSA said that a brake light switch may malfunction if it was not installed properly during a previous safety recall on these vehicles. The brake lights may either become inoperative or stay on all the time, which could lead to a crash, according to the NHTSA. Steve Keyes, spokesman for Volkswagen of America said that the recall affects vehicles with automatic transmissions and cruise control and that no accidents or injuries have been reported.

Volkswagen will install a newly designed brake light switch free of charge when the recall begins on or before December 8, 2006. Contact Volkswagen of America at 1-800-822-8987 or your local Volkswagen dealership for more information regarding this recall.
