Volkswagen developing Smart ForTwo challenger

In a recent interview with German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Martin Winterkorn revealed plans for a new model that will be positioned below the Fox and will compete with DaimlerChrysler's Smart ForTwo ultracompact. It will be "an economical, everyday small car that looks attractive and is affordable," according to Winterkorn and adds that it will "have space for four people plus luggage" unlike the ForTwo.

There is no official word on when the model would be available but sources say it should be ready within the next 30 months.
