Concept Tiguan on the move

A short little video of the Concept Tiguan surfaces from within the depths of YouTube. And unlike past Volkswagen promotional videos, this one lacks the cliche soundtrack which means we get to hear Volkswagen's new Clean TDI. The video also gives a very nice impression of the vehicle's proportions. With the Tiguan launch, sometime at the end of next year, Volkswagen is setting their sights on the RAV-4 and the CR-V and the more upscale BMW X3.

Watch and enjoy.

"Concept" Tiguan breaks cover at LA Auto Show

Volkswagen today released the very first pieces of information and, more importantly, photos of the long awaited Tiguan just in time for the Los Angeles Auto Show. Officially called Concept Tiguan, this vehicle is basically a road-going version of the Concept A from earlier this year.

The Concept Tiguan drops some aspects of the Concept A but picks up some good ones as well. Gone is the Concept A's rakish silhouette, as well as the near-gimmicky concept-only interior. The Concept Tiguan silhouette screams 'baby Touareg' in every sense. A look from the side reveals squared wheel arches at the far corners of the vehicle, which lends for better off-road capability. From the rear, the Concept Tiguan could be mistaken for an enlarge Golf were it not for the slightly different taillight design. This is testament to the Tiguan's Mk.V Golf DNA. Up front, the Concept Tiguan sheds even more Concept A but gains more character. The headlight assembly hardly changes but the foglights do. So does the grille, which is now done in a dark metal finish which is distinct but also matches perfectly with the Volkswagen norm at the same time. Inside, the Concept Tiguan borrows heavily from Europe's Golf Plus in the dashboard layout. That said, North Americans will find it refreshingly well thought out. A three spoke, sporty steering wheel is prominently displayed. All seams are orange, as are the patterns on the seats that recall the pattern on the wheels. This detail will probably be dropped, however, for the final product.

Also making its debut in LA is Volkswagen's first Bluetec engine which Volkswagen has called "Clean TDI", which is what the Concept Tiguan is powered by. As we announced several days ago, Volkswagen will be joining the Bluetec bandwagon with BMW and Mercedes-Benz by employing Bluetec technology in diesel engines. Bluetec boasts reduced emissions and, more importantly, satisfies emission standards that Volkswagen's TDI didn't. Volkswagen didn't give performance numbers for the Clean TDI but expect it with the final product.

We won't have to wait long for the final product, actually. Volkswagen will be releasing new info on the Tiguan (and shedding the word 'concept' from its moniker) when it makes its debut in early 2007. The first customers, likely in Europe, should be getting theirs by the end of next year. North American availability should come by late 2007 to early 2008.

In the meantime, bask your eyes for more photos of this concept, as well as the press release.

Volkswagen presents study of the new Tiguan

Los Angeles, 29 November 2006

Made in Germany: Concept Tiguan shows design full of power and clarity

All-around talent: Concept Tiguan transfers Touareg idea to another class

Clean power: Concept Tiguan has entirely new “Clean TDI”

The countdown for the Tiguan has begun: Volkswagen will bring the “small Touareg” to market at the end of next year – a SUV, a highly variable companion for use on all routes, terrains and in all situations. Some initial signs of just how this Volkswagen – with all-wheel drive in most versions – might appear were offered in early 2006 with the Concept A presented in Berlin. Front grille, headlamps, engine hood, front fenders and wheel arches gave flashing glimpses of the Tiguan and showed where the journey is headed. Now this journey will be continued in Los Angeles: That is because with the exceptionally early world premiere of the Concept Tiguan at the LA Auto Show Volkswagen is now offering another preview of the sport utility vehicle that will arrive at its first customers within twelve months.

The concept car being presented in Los Angeles is powered by a “Clean TDI” that is an entirely new development – a diesel engine of the next generation. In this diesel of the future Volkswagen will employ a modular concept of different systems to once again significantly reduce emissions. One of these powertrain systems includes a NOx storage catalytic converter and as a whole reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 90% compared to engines known today.. The “Clean TDI” from Volkswagen will satisfy the strictest emissions standards in the world.

The “Clean TDI” introduced in the Concept Tiguan is also one of the first components of the BLUETEC offensive initiated jointly by Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. The goal of this partnership is to establish the concept of BLUETEC as a uniform label for clean and low consumption cars and SUVs with diesel engines. BLUETEC denotes diesel drives that comply with even the strictest emissions regulations of the US market. The technologies used and individually developed by each manufacturer serve to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in particular – the only exhaust components that lie above the rates of gasoline engines due to the conceptual design of diesel engines. The BLUETEC partnership was recently started in the course of the LA Auto Show.

THE CONCEPT TIGUAN IN DETAIL /
Concept Tiguan is characterized by a design full of
power and clarity. It is a design as only German automobiles possess

Power.
“It was very important to us to have the car appear powerful. Muscular. For us that had a higher priority than anything else”, explains Klaus Bischoff, Head of the Design Centre in Wolfsburg. Bischoff continues: “An offroader needs a long hood and an upright position. That lends the vehicle self-assuredness and power.“

And that has consequences: The Concept Tiguan comes across as self-assured, with high value, grown-up, astute. It transfers the Touareg idea of a highly capable touring car and SUV into another class. The Tiguan does not stop where normal tracks end. But it does not acquire this talent at the cost of refined street manners, rather it masters the ride through both worlds – of asphalt paths and nature’s paths. The design of the Concept Tiguan, specially built for the auto show in Los Angeles, makes precisely this clear.

FRONT END DESIGN /
The insignia front grille of the Concept Tiguan was
designed to be three-dimensional.

A typical, familiar, congenial Volkswagen. Yet everything is new, further developed. The lead exterior designer Klaus Bischoff: “We gave the insignia front grille a powerful contour.. Although we have taken a step forward, we still retain the same symbols introduced on our new models of the recent past.” And those are details, as in the case of the Concept Tiguan, that include the dark-anodized metallic tone of the insignia front grille that contrasts with the body color, the grid pattern integrated here with two dominant cross struts to the left and right of the VW logo, and the chrome frame. It is the headlamps that join together with the insignia grille and the bumper.

The engine hood brings up the headlamps and lends the face a very focused expression. The Xenon headlamps themselves are a refined visual treat, because– similar to large studio spotlights – they are supported along their central axes and appear to float freely inside their housings. Given a broad and powerful shape are the bumpers beneath the headlamps, laterally completed by fog lamps placed in an own frame.

Clarity.
The real character of the front end however is achieved in the interplay of all design elements. And the totality of the 1.85 meter wide, 1.69 meter high and 4.40 meter long Concept Tiguan demonstrates a clarity of forms and proportions that let it stand out distinctly from the majority of SUVs in the jungle of the big city. Klaus Bischoff explains how this clarity is achieved: „Volkswagen Design results from a clear architecture made of lines andsurfaces. The baselines are reduced to only few and they are full of suspense. That’s what gives the Concept Tiguan such a distinguished and charismatic character.“

SILHOUETTE DESIGN /
The lateral lines – from the headlamps to the taillights –
string the well thought-out design elements like pearls on a necklace

Nothing less applies to the silhouette of the Concept Tiguan. Here too clarity and power dominate the forms, and here too there is no detail that is random in appearance or not thought out to its conclusion. Viewed from the side, except for the small VW symbols in the 19 inch wheel rims, there is no logo that “tips off” the viewer that the Concept Tiguan is a Volkswagen. And yet at first glance it is immediately apparent that this is a Volkswagen, and especially from this perspective it can be made out as a brother of the Touareg. It is immediately clear that this SUV has a European, a German origin. Clarity and power express themselves in very distinctive wheel arches here, a window line that rises toward the rear, door and fender surfaces that are once-again three-dimensional – with a strong modulation – and unmistakably designed C-pillars.

Every detail here follows a logic of form that binds the totality together. The Concept Tiguan exhibits the same visual presence as the Touareg. Typical for VW is how the emphasis is put on the wheel archs and of course the succinct C-pillars positioned on muscular shoulders.

Tires.
Since the Concept Tiguan is a study, the designers are also forging new paths when it comes to tires. The 19 inch tires for these prototypes were developed by Continental. The key feature: They have an orange radial stripe beneath the tire profile that matches the paint color of the Concept Tiguan. This radial stripe is not simply painted on, rather the orange penetrates the rubber layer as a “baked in” component of the tire’s cord casing. The orange stripes visible in the silhouette emphasize the sizes of the tires. Meanwhile, the 19 inch alloy rims that retain the same Anthracite color as the body trim are a concrete proposal for the later production vehicle.

REAR END DESIGN /
This classic SUV design expresses competence and offers numerous practical advantages

Typical of Volkswagen is the design of the rear end. Here too the description is: Typical and yet completely different. Typical, because the basic construction of the taillights follows that of the Eos or Passat variant, and they are part of the powerful shoulder section.. Different, because the overall design takes new directions, the steep tailgate extends far into the bumpers and is a design component that joins classic, pure SUV elements to contemporary, urban forms. Right below the tailgate is the vehicle license plate. The lowermost bumper section is unpainted, which mirrors the front end with regard to its protective strength in offroad use. Distinctive are the integrated diffuser and the exhaust pipes next to it on the left and right that also have dark trim.

INTERIOR /
A large panoramic roof
floods the variable and spacious interior with light

In the interior the study holds to the colors black, silver and orange. Black components include the leather seats, the instruments, some of which are also trimmed with a vintage style leather, the door trim and leather steering wheel. Silver: The instruments themselves as well as the door handles, inside and out. Orange: All leather seams and the orange tire stripe pattern integrated in the center seat panels. The reason that a friendly atmosphere prevails in the Concept Tiguan in spite of the dark interior equipment lies not only in the interior design but in the transparent 1.34 meter long and 0.85 meter wide panoramic sunroof.

When taking a seat in the concept car one recognizes immediately that this is a well thought-out, ergonomically designed and spacious interior. Seating is equally comfortable at all five occupant positions on board the Concept Tiguan. The rear seat bench can be adjusted longitudinally and has asymmetrical fold-down capability. When folded down the Concept Tiguan can handle objects up to 2.5 meters in length of any imaginable type and transforms itself into a MPV. In the first quarter of 2007 the facts will come out on this and numerous other technical innovations of the new Volkswagen. And indeed at that time the Tiguan name will no longer qualified by the word Concept.

Volkswagen Savanna in the works?

Renderings by Autobild
Autobild, that German publication that makes spot on renderings of future models has released a new set of renderings for a future Volkswagen model called Savanna. According to Autobild, the Savanna will be based off of the Passat Wagon but will be more sporty. That means a lower height, wider stance, and reduced overhangs. Think Dodge Magnum/Chrysler 300 Touring.

Although there are no specific details at this point, there should a a slew of petrol and diesel engines available with a manual or DSG. 4Motion availability is unsure.

So is North American availability, for that matter. However if Volkswagen does go through with it, Expect production in or around 2009.

Volkswagen shows what the Touareg can really do

Forget that trailer. Volkswagen says you should tow bigger stuff with your diesel-powered Touareg like, say, a Boeing 747-200. They did just that in a recent press event where Volkswagen wanted to demonstrate the Touareg V10 TDI's pulling power.

For all intents and purposes, this Touareg remained stock for this exercise. The only modifications were an axle from the Touareg V8 and towing gear to get the 747 on the Touareg's tail. The Touareg V8's axle turned out to unnecessary since the driver, Uwe Krieghoff, used low ratio second gear during the run. As well, ballast weights that totalled 4,345 kg were added to the Touareg bringing it's weight to 7,030 kg. Other than those additions, however, the Touareg sported a stock engine, transmission, suspension, tires, and brakes. The plane, on the other hand, was a decommissioned British Airways jet that is now used as props for movies. That meant it didn't have proper engines. However, weights on the aircraft compensated for this missing weight.

And indeed the Touareg got far, all things considered. About 150 meters at 5 mph until the Touareg stopped both itself and the plane with only the stock brakes. After the drive, Krieghoff said: "I was a bit disappointed we couldn't find something heavier to tow – it was too easy! If anyone can lend us a heavier aeroplane, please let us know." Indeed, when the Touareg was checked after the run, no adverse effects were found.

Press release and more photos of this unbelievable feat after the jump.

Source: Volkswagen AGWolfsburg, 24 November 2006 - “Wanna bet that a Touareg V10 TDI can tow a Boeing 747?” “A 155-ton jet?” “Never!” “Sure it can!” This verbal exchange by two Volkswagen employees had consequences: A few months later, on Thursday this week, a Volkswagen crew did indeed hook up a new generation Touareg V10 TDI to a 747. The certified result: The SUV pulled it off easily. However, the receipt of orders from airport operators wanting to replace their tow vehicles weighing up to 70 tons with the significantly more economical Touareg could not be confirmed.

The "Touareg tows a Boeing 747" event took place at the Dunsfold Aerodrome in England, located 40 miles from the gates of London. From the very start the question, entirely seriously meant, was posed about how powerful a modern, top range SUV with engine, four-wheel drive and chassis is.

The Touareg is innately the ideal towing vehicle: Maximum load capacities are 3,500 kilos for trailers and 1,640 kilos for the rear axle. But when instead of a 3.5 ton boat trailer a jet weighing over 155 tons – consisting of 511 m2 of wing surface, 4 engines, 450 seats and a fuselage the size of a block of houses – is attached to the hitch, things look quite a bit different. Careful preparations must be made.

In order for the Touareg V10 TDI to be able to tow the big bird, the weight of the Volkswagen had to first be increased. This sounds paradoxical but is absolutely necessary so that the power of the engine can be converted into propelling force. For this purpose steel balls and steel plates were distributed in the SUV. Extra weight: 4,345 kilos! Total weight of the Touareg: 7,030 kilos. Weight distribution: 2,755 kilos in front, 4,275 kilos in back.

The other modifications were kept to a minimum. For the front axle drive the shorter transmission of the Touareg V8 was integrated in place of the V10 TDI transmission. The crew increased air pressure in the standard Michelin tires to 4.5 bar. And finally, the maximum speed was limited – not out of fear that the unusual harnessed system would become airborne, but to protect the tires. Everything else, from the engine to the shock suspension system and four-wheel drive corresponded exactly to the series production version.

An extra device was then used to hook up the Boeing 747 to the Touareg’s standard trailer hitch. The experiment could begin. Based on the maximum torque of the V10 TDI (750 Nm) and the transmission ratio, the engineers had previously calculated that the Touareg would be able to put approx. 200 tons into motion. But who would trust his calculations if a 1.7 meter high, 4.75 meter long car was suddenly attached to a 19.4 meter high jet over 70 meters long? Nobody would. Especially not when typical English weather with heavy rain and headwinds were lashing across the car and jet as if there was no tomorrow.

But the Touareg did the job. Volkswagen technician Uwe Krieghoff took the wheel. He started the engine. Using the four-wheel drive control on the middle console he selected the "LOW" setting for reduced off-road speed. 50 percent of driving force was now distributed to the front axle and 50 percent to the back. Krieghoff manually selected the second gear of the automatic transmission, accelerated slowly and reflected on getting the 18 head-height wheels of the 155 ton 747 rolling from a standing position. The greatest power was required in these few seconds. As soon as this harnessed system got moving, it would move. But the only thing that budged at first was the engine speed. Krieghoff continued to push down the gas pedal to about the halfway position. And with not a hint of traction problems the Touareg and the jumbo jet started moving. After a distance of 150 meters Krieghoff slowed the harnessed system to a stop.

A post check-up of the Touareg did not find any evidence of damage to the car. Everything was A-OK.

Incidentally, the new generation of the Touareg is now available for order. The SUV comes standard equipped with ESP plus trailer stabilization. It is extremely effective at preventing trailers from dangerously fishtailing when improperly loaded or traveling at excessively high speed. The system didn’t kick in during the test with the 747 – the speed was only eight km/h.

Golf production in Brussels plant ends

Source: Volkswagen AG
BRUSSELS - Volkswagen plans to restructure the Brussels location, reflecting excess capacity in Western Europe. The management of Volkswagen Brussels started talks on Tuesday with the employee representatives on a corresponding concept, under which the Golf will no longer be manufactured at three plants in Western Europe in the future, but at two – Mosel and Wolfsburg.

The Western European automotive market is largely saturated and is struggling with excess capacity. Volkswagen’s Western European plants are not running at full capacity, despite a rise in market share. Export opportunities, too, cannot be expanded significantly due to the US dollar exchange rates and high import duties in growth markets, among other factors. The growth markets of the future are above all Russia, India and China.

Press release continues...

Volkswagen has therefore initiated a far-reaching restructuring at its German locations. The core element is a reduction by up to 20,000 jobs in Germany, much of which has already been implemented. Additional optimization measures in Germany are planned.

Following these cuts in Germany, other locations must now be incorporated into the restructuring program so as to ensure competitive production and capacity utilization at the Volkswagen plants in Western Europe as a whole. That is why production capacity must be aligned with the current operating environment. Talks have begun with the employee representatives on a concept to structure capacity at the plant, and all economic alternatives will be reviewed so as to keep as many jobs as possible in Brussels.

The Administrative Board emphasized that Volkswagen intended to stay at the Brussels location and urged all involved to provide it with constructive support in the light of the difficult environment. The company is aware of its responsibility for all employees in Brussels and will develop a socially responsible settlement together with all stakeholders.

The management of Volkswagen Brussels announced that it was holding more in-depth talks with the employee representatives with immediate effect.

GTI Edition 30 photo update

Volkswagen has finally released the first official images (correct wheels and all) of their upcoming Volkswagen GTI Edition 30. The info in the press release is nothing new but for those joining us just now, the Edition 30 commemorates the GTI's 30th anniversary in Europe and does so with 30 extra horsepower on top of the regular GTI's 200 hp from the 2.0T FSI engine. Exterior modifications come in the form of a body kit and black or silver wheels. Inside, Volkswagen blatantly reminds you of the 30 extra horses under the hood by sticking a plethora of "Edition 30" badges everywhere. Red stitching complement the leather-trimmed Interlagos seats.

As I've said, however, the Edition 30 commemorates the GTI's 30th anniversary in Europe. That means North America will not get it, at least not for a few years and maybe not in this form. We'll see.

In the meantime, you can read and see after the jump.

"Happy Birthday, GTI!"
Golf GTI Edition 30 can be ordered immediately

- Increased performance: 2.0 Turbo FSI engine with 230 bhp
- 18" alloy wheels and gearshift lever in golf ball design

Wolfsburg, 14 November 2006 - It is the icon of compact fast cars: the Golf GTI. For its 30th birthday Volkswagen is now offering the special model Golf GTI Edition 30. The engine performance has been increased by 1 bhp for each year, meaning that the GTI Edition 30 has an output of 230 bhp.

The design study of the Golf GTI Edition 30 developed by Volkswagen Individual had its world premiere in May 2006 during the Golf Record Day in Gelsenkirchen. Since then enthusiasts from all over Europe have sent their compliments to Wolfsburg with a clear message: the vehicle must be built to those exact specifications!

The optical appearance of the study was, therefore, maintained; its main characteristic being the matt black 18" "Detroit" alloy wheels. At no further cost the customer can have the titan silver wheels "Rockingham", also in 18" format. Further features are the front and rear aprons and the side trims in the vehicle colour and also the cherry red rear lights. A further identification of this special edition can be seen in the Edition 30 lettering at the rear.

The interior has also been designed to celebrate the vehicle's anniversary: the leather elements of the top sports seats are combined with the classic GTI "Interlagos" checked design in the centre. Further elements are the red stitching on the three-spoke leather steering wheel, the gearshift lever gaiting and on the handbrake lever. Red Edition 30 lettering can be seen on the door sill and the deco strip ("brushed aluminium") above the glove compartment. Foot mats with red edges and, of course, the gearshift lever with the golf ball design fulfil all the birthday wishes of the loyal fans from all over Europe.

The Golf GTI Edition 30 costs 28,175 euro (manual gearbox), or 29,925 euro (double clutch gearbox DSG). The Volkswagen Bank has attractive financing packages on offer. For example, the anniversary GTI can be purchased for a monthly payment starting at 247 euro using the so-called three way financing package "AutoCredit" over a period of 48 months with an APR of 1.9 percent and a down payment of 20 percent.

Neeza may see light of day...in China

At this year's Auto China show, Volkswagen reveals their new concept, the Neeza. It's hard to judge the size of the thing based on these pictures but rest assured, the Neeza is no Audi Q7. In fact, its underpinnings are based off of the forthcoming Tiguan. As much as it's form (and Volkswagen spinmeisters for that matter) tries to hide it, this is still a wagon.

According to Volkswagen, should the Neeza get the green light for production, it will remain a China-only model. So, unless you live in China, don't expect this in showrooms ever. If you do live in China, word on the street is a model launch by decade's end.

Although the Neeza stole the Volkswagen spotlight at Auto China, the Golf GTI, CrossPolo, and Eos also made their Chinese debut. The Concept A was also shown at the show. The Magotan also makes a debut in China. It is essentially a B6 Passat that will become one of Volkswagen's top models in that market.

Press release and photos after the jump.

World premiere of the Neeza concept as the exhibition highlight

Neeza: new Volkswagen concept designed for China

Magotan: new premium sedan based on the Passat

China premieres: Concept A, Eos, Golf GTI and CrossPolo
Wolfsburg/Beijing, 17 November 2006 - Volkswagen is today igniting a fireworks of superlative innovations at Auto China 2006: Three world and four China premieres will ensure that visitors to the motor show get a picture of the new Volkswagen models being offered in China in the coming years.

As an exhibition highlight and world premiere Volkswagen is showing the Neeza concept, a crossover of a coupé and a station wagon, self-confident and powerful, designed for China in China! In another world premiere Europe’s most successful car maker is also presenting a model modified for the Middle Country: The classy and large Magotan is based on the Passat and from now on will be one of Volkswagen’s top models in China.

In addition, Volkswagen is presenting four China premieres in Beijing. I: With the Concept A Volkswagen is providing a peek at the new Tiguan SUV. II: With the Golf GTI a Volkswagen with cult status is debuting in Beijing. III: With the Eos the first convertible coupé will be available in China. IV: And with the CrossPolo Volkswagen is showing how smart a small car can be.

On the world premiere of the Neeza: Visually, the self-confident mid-sized Neeza model – conceptually a crossover of a coupé and a station wagon – pays its respects to the off-road and sports car world; nevertheless, the Volkswagen designed for China in China convinces with features suitable for everyday use. An all-round talent unifying Chinese and German automotive expertise in a new car generation. The concept opens the window to the future of new models from Shanghai Volkswagen. The culture, the individual taste and the desires of Chinese customers will become an integral component of car development in the design of these cars. An example of exterior design: Here the Neeza demonstrates a completely new symbiosis of Asian SVW design and German Volkswagen design philosophy.

The name Neeza was derived from "Ne-zha". Ne-zha is a celebrated figure from Chinese history. Ne-zha was a small boy with magic weapons who fought against evil spirits. His unequalled will, his youthful and foresighted spirit and courage reflect the idea hidden behind the character and the name of the concept.

On the world premiere of the Magotan: The sedan specially tailored to the Chinese market is a popular car known around the world as the Passat. Technically, the new Magotan is considered a German high-end product. Safety, driving dynamics, engines, quality and ergonomics reflect a standard that is among the best in the world.

It was taken into consideration during the design of the model in Germany that in terms of both design and features this sedan meet every demand of the Chinese market and satisfy the tastes of modern Chinese society. Starting in 2007 the luxurious, sporty and progressive Magotan will be offered in China.

WOLFSBURG, Germany - The Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft today agreed to appoint Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn as Chairman of the Board of Management effective January 1, 2007.

The Supervisory Board also resolved that Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder will leave the Board of Management effective December 31, 2006.

Dr. Pischetsrieder will continue to work for the Group and will assume functions in the interests of the Group.

The Supervisory Board will decide at a later date on a successor to Dr. Winterkorn in his present function as Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG.

Supervisory Board discusses Group planning

At its meeting on Friday, the Supervisory Board also discussed the Group’s current financial and capital expenditure planning for the period 2007 to 2009. According to this, Volkswagen will be investing €24.7 billion in the Automotive Division in the coming three years. In addition to investments in property, plant and equipment, this amount also includes additions to capitalized development costs and investments in financial assets.

€17.7 billion of the total amount is accounted for by investments in property, plant and equipment, of which €10.7 billion will be invested in Germany alone. After a relatively low capex/revenue ratio in recent years, this ratio will be maintained at a competitive long-term level of below six percent, as in the previous planning round.

At €11.8 billion, the bulk of the Group’s spending on property, plant and equipment for the Automotive Division will be devoted to modernizing and expanding the product range. The focus will be on successor models and new derivatives in almost all vehicle classes, and will enable the Volkswagen Group to systematically continue its new model rollout to ensure even greater market penetration. With regard to power trains, new generations of petrol engines offering improved performance, fuel consumption and emissions will be introduced, and diesel engines will be switched to common rail technology. Production capacity for double clutch gearboxes, an area in which the Group continues to offer globally unique technology, will be aligned with the growing demand.

Indian investment project approved

The Supervisory Board also approved the plans by the Board of Management for an investment project in India. Volkswagen will build a production plant in the north of the city of Pune in the state of Maharashtra. Under the current plans, the new plant will employ around 2,500 people and will start production of a small passenger car model in the second half of 2009.

India is one of the fastest growing automotive markets worldwide, but high import duties on vehicles mean that any meaningful market presence can only be achieved by establishing domestic production facilities. Volkswagen examined a number of locations in India in detail and chose the Pune region because of its economic environment, good logistics links and sufficiently strongly established supplier structure. The region also offers qualified employees who will ensure that production meets appropriate quality standards.

Supervisory Board reiterates resolutions on MAN and Scania

Volkswagen’s Supervisory Board continues to support the merger of MAN and Scania and confirmed its two resolutions adopted on October 15. It continues to seek an amicable solution, but is open to other strategies if necessary.

Volkswagen will offer MAN its interest in Scania if MAN holds at least 56.01 percent of Scania’s voting rights and at least 71.31 of its share capital.

However, if it is clear that the offer will not be successful, Volkswagen reserves the right to seek any alternative solution.

Feast your eyes: Passat R36 shots leaked

Shots of Volkswagen's highly anticipated performance Passat R36 have surfaced on the Internet. And these are not by any means spy shots but rather official, press release material. Powered at 296 hp by Volkswagen's 3.6L FSI engine, this beast can be propelled to 60 in a mere 5.6 seconds for the sedan and just .2 seconds more for the wagon. Top speed comes at an impressive 155 mph.

The Passat R36 comes equipped with Volkswagen's acclaimed DSG and 4Motion all-wheel drive for maximum grip. Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson lauded the Golf R32 for it's amazing grip so expect the same for the Passat R36. Expect it at the Essen Motor Show this December with a market launch early next year. North American availability still pending.

Now onto the eye candy, after the jump.

Porsche takeover imminent at Volkswagen?

Porsche AG today has confirmed that they have received approval from their board to increase stake in Volkswagen from 27.4 to 29.9%, just one percent shy of 30 which would require Porsche to make a formal takeover offer.

This report comes just a week after Pischetsrieder announced his resignation and a few days after rumors that Bernhard may leave Volkswagen. It's obvious that Piëch has something to do with these recent chain of events. All this may be in an effort to regain more control of Volkswagen, some of which he lost after he left as Volkswagen AG's chairman.

We shall keep a close eye on this.

Bernhard may be the next to go

It has only been a week since Pischetsrieder's announcement, now rumors that Volkswagen Brand head Wolfgang Bernhard may be also thinking of leaving the company. Volkswagen's Board has asked Bernhard for a commitment by Friday for extending his contract. He has said nothing. One interesting point, however, is that according to German newspapers, Bernhard has threatened to leave Volkswagen as early as May if Winterkorn gets appointed as Pischetsrieder's replacement. This happened so nothing is preventing Bernhard from sticking to his word.

We will keep a close eye on this as there seems to be a power struggle going on in the depths of Volkswagen.

With Winterkorn Comes Big Changes

There will be sweeping changes in Volkswagen in the coming year. Dr. Pischetsrieder's replacement, Dr. Martin Winterkorn, is planning some major changes is Volkswagen's management structure. To what extent these changes will go, no one knows but they will definitely be sweeping.

As part of his restructuring, Winterkorn plans to take a page out of Ford's book and split Volkswagen brands into two distinct groups: premium and volume. Under the premium group will be Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Bugatti while the volume group will include Volkswagen, Seat, and Skoda.

Winterkorn's restructuring plan has major implications for the Volkswagen brand. This means that Volkswagen's course will be to produce volume models rather than special one-off models that should be left to, say, maybe Audi (ie: Phaeton). And because of this, models in the volume category will not directly compete with models in the premium category (ie: Phaeton again).

Whether or not this will be good for Volkswagen in the long run is still up in the air but consider this: while Volkswagen's performance this year has been so-so despite releasing new models, Audi has been doing much better in North America. If that's any indication of the man taking the helm at Volkswagen, then maybe, just maybe, Winterkorn's appointment is the beginning of Volkswagen's turn-around in this market.

Popular Science: Eos is "Best of What's New"

Convertible’s revolutionary design among features that rank it tops in automotive category

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The 2007 Volkswagen Eos has been awarded a “2006 Best of What’s New” award from Popular Science in the automotive category. To win, a product or technology must represent a significant step forward in its respective category.

The automobile distinguished itself from thousands of new products and innovations to represent the top 100 winners across 10 categories: Automotive, Aviation & Space, Computing, Engineering, Gadgets, General Innovation, Home Entertainment, Home Tech, Personal Health and Recreation. Winners will be featured in the December special editorial section of the publication.

Press release continues...

“Best of What’s New” is the ultimate Popular Science accolade, representing a year’s worth of work evaluating thousands of products,” said Mark Jannot, editor of Popular Science. “These awards honor innovations that not only influence the way we live today, but that change the way we think about the future.”

Named after the Greek goddess of dawn, Eos, the Volkswagen Eos is the world’s first four-seat, hard-top convertible with an integrated glass sunroof. The CSC™ (coupe-sunroof-convertible) is a revolutionary five-panel roof that transforms the coupe’s hardtop, with integrated sunroof and heated-glass rear window, into an open-air convertible.

With the click of a switch, owners of the 2007 Eos enjoy the desirous attributes of a traditional “rag top” and the benefits of a protected and quiet interior environment of a hard-top. In an industry “first-and-only,” the panoramic, tinted glass power sunroof is integrated into the folding roof of the Volkswagen Eos. The externally-guided, tilt-and-slide sunroof with automatic pinch protection gets “sandwiched” between roof panels as the hard-top is lowered.

Available with the award-winning 2.0T four-cylinder or the innovative 3.2 L narrow-angle V6 engines, other notable features of the Volkswagen 2007 Eos include Climatic single-zone air conditioning as standard in the base Eos, with dual-zone Climatronic™ standard in the Eos 2.0T and 3.2 L models. Easy entry rear seats that "remember" the driver's and front passenger's longitudinal seating positions, and return to these once the rear passengers have entered or exited the vehicle are standard on the Eos 3.2 L and optional on the 2.0T models.

For nighttime driving, an Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) available on 2007 Eos 3.2 L models swivels low-beam headlights to improve visibility though turns. The headlight rotation to a maximum of 15 degrees is activated by the steering wheel or by operation of the turn signals. In addition, the “Coming Home” feature helps light the way inside during nighttime arrivals. Rollover Protection System. Spring tension instantly elevates the roll bar-like elements of the Rollover Protection System. In the event of a severe frontal impact, a side or rear collision, or in the case of vehicle rollover or extreme lateral tilt, specially-designed individual “roll-bars” pop up from behind the rear seats.

The 2007 Eos 2.0T offers 200 horsepower and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engine. High-pressure, Fuel Stratified Injection helps with performance and efficiency. The 2007 Eos 2.0T is EPA-rated at an estimated 23 miles per gallon in the city and an impressive 32 mpg in highway driving.

Neeza Concept to be Shown at Beijing Auto Show

Autoblog is reporting that Volkswagen is poised to introduce a new concept at the Beijing Auto Show later this month called the Neeza. It looks like Volkswagen has reached into the VAG parts bin for the Neeza as it shares a striking resemblance to Audi's Q7 in shape. But that's where the similarities end. The Neeza has suicide doors and cameras acting as rear view mirrors. As well, the Neeza can read various media formats and store data on an internal hard drive. Other than that, nothing much is known. It's also not known if the Neeza will remain a China-only model or if it will even reach production.

Renderings and sketches after the jump.
