New Engine Family Improves Efficiency

Text from Volkswagen AG.
Wolfsburg, 30 September 2005 - The Volkswagen Group is developing a new family of 4-cylinder TDI engines in the context of a modular strategy which will prepare the diesel engines for future, more stringent regulations as well as for world-wide service.

With this effort, Volkswagen confirms its leading position in the field of TDI engines.

The engines will first be used in 2007 and, with a total capacity of more than 2 million engines per year, will replace the current 3 and 4-cylinder engines in the medium term.

This new generation of engines further increases the advantages of today’s diesels in regard to efficiency, environment and performance with high levels of synergy and offers the customers the most modern TDI engine technology at attractive prices.

Touran HyMotion Under the Golden Gate Bridge

Text and photo from Volkswagen AG.
Today's bestseller with the power of tomorrow on the road down the Californian coast

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Two Touran HyMotion vehicles are participating in the fourth CaFCP Road Rally. Both Touran HyMotion vehicles are equipped with the 80 kW electric engine powered by fuel cells. The press, politicians, the government, environmental groups as well as members of student organisations have the opportunity to become familiar with the vehicles and their emissions-free technology during test drives.

The route, which was laid down by the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP), founded in 1999 by Volkswagen and other partners, leads from Sacramento via Berkeley and San Jose to San Francisco. The objectives of this year's rally are to demonstrate the advantages of hydrogen-fuelled fuel cell vehicles, propagate the use of sustainable vehicles, to draw public attention to the hydrogen filling stations between Sacramento and San Francisco and also to provide the general public with the opportunity to experience this new technology at first hand. The CaFCP is made up of a cooperation of fuel suppliers, fuel cell manufacturers, vehicle groups and representatives of the US government.

The standard version of the Touran, powered by petrol and diesel engines which are both agile and economical, is the most popular van by far in Germany. In the Touran HyMotion, however, an 80 kW electric engine is the power source. The electricity is provided by a chemical reactor: the fuel cell. The performance figures are impressive: in 14 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and a top speed of 140 km/h.

Compact SUV to be Built in Wolfsburg

Text from Volkswagen AG.
Emden also wins production of new model

Wolfsburg, 27 September 2005 - The Board of Management of Volkswagen AG decided on Monday evening to build the compact SUV with AUTO 5000 at the Wolfsburg plant. The decision was preceded by negotiations with the General Works Council and the IG Metall trade union to establish an economically viable basis. At the same time, the Board of Management made a commitment to build a new model at the Emden plant from 2008.

Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand, said: “We are pleased that, together with the Works Council and IG Metall, we have been able to make the necessary cost reduction of some 850 Euro per vehicle. Finding a solution was not easy for any of those involved. What is important, however, is that we can now produce and export the vehicle from Germany at competitive conditions.”

The compact SUV will be built by AUTO 5000 GmbH. To this end, approximately 1,000 apprentices at Volkswagen AG who will have completed their training in 2006 or 2007 will join the present workforce at AUTO 5000. The apprentices will be hired at AUTO 5000 terms of employment, but are to be given an undertaking from Volkswagen AG to return to employment there in the event of manpower requirements at the company.

Bernd Osterloh, Chairman of the General Works Council, said: “It was important for us to build the compact SUV in Wolfsburg and safeguard jobs for over 1,000 colleagues.”

The collective bargaining partners also agreed to build a further model from the product initiative at the Emden plant under a modified company collective agreement, the terms of which still have to be finalized. This assumes that an economically viable basis for the vehicle can be found. Details will be settled by mid-October.

Furthermore, the management and Works Council also decided to enhance the competitiveness of the Wolfsburg plant further in order to build an additional model in Wolfsburg on this basis. Decisions are still pending.

Volkswagen Welcomes Porsche's Interest in a Strategic Participation

Text from Volkswagen AG.
Germany’s position as an automotive and technology basis strengthened

WOLFSBURG, Germany - Porsche AG, Stuttgart, today announced its interest in acquiring some 20 percent of the voting capital of Volkswagen AG.

For Porsche, the move is motivated by the fact that Volkswagen has not only become an important development partner, but also a major technology and production partner for some 30 percent of sales.

Speaking on behalf of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group, its Chairman Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder welcomed the strategic interest of Porsche AG in participating in the company. He said a stable shareholder structure was very important for the automotive business with its long term orientation.

Volkswagen and Porsche have already been cooperating on projects such as the Touareg/Cayenne for quite some time. The partners recently announced technological cooperation in the field of hybrid powertrains at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Volkswagen welcomes the additional support brought to this cooperation by a participation which lends further weight to these collaborative efforts.

The participation envisaged by Porsche also substantiates one of the Volkswagen Group’s own business policies; for the automotive business with its long term orientation, a stable shareholder structure is very important.

New "Design Package" for Passat and Passat Estate

Text from Volkswagen AG.
WOLFSBURG, Germany - Passat customers can now upgrade their vehicle using the “design package” from Volkswagen Individual: the package gives both the saloon and the estate versions an appealing, personal and sporty touch.

The love of the car is often reflected in the details: with dark chrome radiator grille, side window trims and rear lettering in the new “design package” for the Passat, for example. The anthracite-painted 18 inch “Chicago” alloy wheels with five double-spoke design and gloss finish are also an eye-catcher. These are combined with a 15 millimetre lower sports suspension which is specifically tuned to match the wheels. Tinted rear and side windows match the dark chrome and wheels.

A look at the vehicle interior shows the attractive contrast between dark nappa and light-coloured “Sensitive” leather in “Snow Beige”. The two-tone concept is adhered to throughout, with the door panelling also in "Snow Beige", for example. The multi-function steering wheel and gearstick knob also have light-coloured stitching and the fabric foot mats have a light-coloured surround. The dark, brushed aluminium decorative strips and the sill panel strips with “Individual” lettering give the vehicle an individual touch.

Other useful features in the “design package” include fog lights, heated windscreen washer jets, heated front and rear seats which can be regulated separately and two-zone "Climatronic" air conditioning system. The “RCD 200” radio-CD system with four speakers in the front completes the range.

The “design package” for the Passat and Passat Estate is available to order across Europe for the Sportline equipment range. The package is available in Germany for 6 102 EUR with normal chrome fittings and exclusively with dark chrome for 6 402 EUR starting in the autumn.

Other individualisation products
In addition to the “design package”, Volkswagen Individual also offers a wheel range with four high quality wheels in both 17 and 18-inch format for the Passat and Passat Estate. Alongside the “Chicago" model, this includes the 18-inch "Samarkand" alloy wheels, the 17-inch “Avignon” alloy wheels and the five double-spoke model “Siena”. The “Siena” and “Avignon” models are available in titan silver or sterling silver. The “RCD 500 Dynaudio Sound” sound system with ten-channel amplifier and ten speakers can be ordered on request and can be combined with the "RNS MFD-DVD" DVD navigation system.

Volkswagen Welcomes Porsche Plans to Buy 20% Stake

Text from Reuters.
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Volkswagen said on Sunday it welcomed a plan by luxury carmaker Porsche to take a 20-percent stake in it to ensure their long-term business ties and prevent any hostile takeover of VW.

A Volkswagen spokesman quoted Chief Executive Bernd Pischetsrieder as saying a stable shareholder structure was important for its long-term business prospects and would strengthen VW's working relationship with Porsche.

Porsche said earlier it planned to build up its stake from currently under 5 percent and might buy shares in the open market to do so.

Luxury carmaker Porsche builds its Cayenne offroader with Volkswagen and also works with VW on developing fuel-saving hybrid technology.

Porsche to Acquire 20% Stake in Volkswagen

Text from the Associated Press.
Luxury sports car maker Porsche AG said Sunday it plans to acquire a stake of about 20 percent in Volkswagen AG, a move aimed at strengthening ties between the automakers and preventing a future hostile takeover of Volkswagen.

Porsche said Volkswagen has become "a significant supplier for about 30 percent of our sales volume" as well as "an important partner in development."

The two companies worked together to develop Porsche's Cayenne sport utility vehicle and Volkswagen's Touareg. They recently announced that they, along with Audi AG, were forming an alliance to develop hybrid engines.

"With this engagement, we want to secure our business relations with VW and also safeguard in the long term a significant part of our future planning," Porsche chief executive Wendelin Wiedeking said in a statement.

Stuttgart-based Porsche said it hoped the investment would enable it to head off any future hostile takeover of Volkswagen by investors "who do not have the longterm interests of VW as their aim."

That scenario could arise if the European Court of Justice rules against a German law that effectively protects the company, Europe's largest automaker, from such a takeover.

"Our planned investment is the strategic answer to this risk," Wiedeking said.

"This 'German solution' that we are seeking is a significant precondition for the stable development of Volkswagen AG" and for the two companies' future cooperation, he said.

Porsche said it was in contact with Volkswagen's management and did not plan to take over the company. Volkswagen welcomed Porsche's move, which it said supported its "independent business policy."

"A stable shareholder structure is very important" in the long term, it added.

The European Commission took Germany to court last year over the VW law. It has long argued that the decades-old law goes against the grain of the 25-nation bloc's single market principles, although German politicians claim it helps ensure stability at the company.

The Commission objects to provisions of the 1960 law privatizing Volkswagen that cap a shareholder's voting rights at 20 percent, regardless of the number of shares held, and requires a majority of 80 percent for "important decisions."

The state of Lower Saxony, where VW's Wolfsburg headquarters is situated, is currently the biggest shareholder, with a stake of 18.2 percent.

A 20 percent stake would currently cost Porsche more than euro3 billion (US$3.6 billion). Porsche said it could finance the purchase with "available liquidity," but did not elaborate.

Porsche said its investment would not reach the 30 percent threshold that, under German law, would require it to make a public takeover offer for Volkswagen.

Volkswagen shares rose late last week amid rumors that a large investor was building up a stake in the company. On Friday, they closed up 3.4 percent at euro51.86 (US$62.49).

Germany's biggest industrial union, IG Metall, welcomed Porsche's move to protect Volkswagen.

"This is good for the company and good for Germany as an industrial location," union spokesman Georgios Arwanitidis told the daily Frankfurter Rundschau.

The New Golf R32

Text and photos from Volkswagen AG.
Flagship Golf Returns

Superior: Most powerful Golf ever with four-wheel drive as standard

Fast: New Golf R32 delivers 250 hp and reaches 250 km/h

Wolfsburg, 23 September 2005 - The new R32 is the most powerful and fastest Golf ever. Its predecessor has already become a collector’s item - we sold three times as many first generation Golf R32s than we originally planned. Now the flagship Golf returns on the basis of the current version of Europe’s most successful car. The combination of standard four-wheel drive (4MOTION), 184 kW / 250 hp, 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds (using DSG* gearbox) and a top speed of 250 km/h make the Golf R32 one of the best sports cars in the compact class. Ideally balanced for fast lap times on track days, the equally comfortable Golf R32 is also recommended for long trips between appointments.

Engine and chassis: The perfect way to transfer power to the road

R32 V6:
At the heart of the new top of the range Golf is a four-valve six-cylinder engine, which has a displacement of 3,189 cm3 and delivers 320 Newton metres. Its sonorous tone testifies to its superior power development. The engine propels the Golf forwards from any rev range as if there was no air resistance. Power to weight ratio: 6 kg/hp.

R32 handling: The engineers have tuned the sports chassis perfectly to the V6 boost and 4MOTION grip. While the GTI chassis has been lowered by 15 millimetres compared with the series model, the new R32 has been lowered 20 millimetres. This car is therefore both comfortable and, thanks to the four-wheel drive, very agile.

A question of character: GT, GTI and R32 all feature individual design statements

R32 front section:
The new model is distinguished more greatly from the other derivatives in the series than the first Golf R32 was. Customers have an excellent choice of exterior colours including the exclusive “Deep Blue Pearl Effect”, which ensured the first generation of R32 could be spotted miles away. Like the current Golf GTI and Golf GT, the Golf R32 has its own special radiator grille. The design and aluminium look of the R32 grille also distinguish it from the GTI and GT front. Particularly the lower part of the grille framed by Bi-Xenon headlights shows great modulation in the style of classic sports cars. Double aluminium-look horizontal bars in the upper section of the radiator form a further R32 element. At the side of the radiator grille, two additional large intakes complete the air supply. Furthermore, in contrast to all other Golfs, the lower third of the front bumper is painted completely in the body colour and there is an airflow element on each side whose shape continues in the side skirting and the rear bumper.

R32 rear end: The rear bumper on the new Golf R32 is also painted completely in the body colour. Only the centre segment, styled to look like a diffuser, is black. The twin round polished stainless steel tail pipes have been integrated next to each other to make a striking feature.

R32 silhouette: Looking at the Golf R32 from the side, the 18-inch alloy wheels (“Zolder” model) stand out. Featuring a total of 20 spokes, they are based on the design of the first R32 wheels. The blue painted brake callipers are clearly visible behind them. They seize the 345 mm brake discs at the front and 310 mm discs at the rear whenever you hit the brake pedal. The harmoniously integrated roof spoiler uses the aerodynamic forces to push the Golf R32 down onto the road. It joins the powerful-looking C-pillar - a typical Golf feature for decades - as an extension of the roof.

Interior: A new classic is born

R32 interior:
The sporty and exclusive character of the Golf R32 is also reflected in the interior. Highlights include standard sports seats with integrated R32 logo – or optional sports bucket seats exclusively developed for the Golf R32, the metal applications “Engine Spin” (with a circular pattern), a specially designed gearstick knob and a sports steering wheel (leather / perforated leather) with integrated R32 logo in metal for excellent synthesis of good grip and top-class long distance comfort.

Equipment: Bi-Xenon and Climatronic standard on R32

R32 standard equipment, part I:
The complete standard equipment for the R32 includes automatic climate control (Climatronic), onboard computer (MFD), RCD 300 radio CD system, alarm system, rain sensor, coming home/leaving home light function, multifunction steering wheel with shift buttons (with DSG), tyre pressure monitor, blue heat-insulated glass, Bi-Xenon headlights, six airbags and ESP.

R32 standard equipment, part II: The Golf R32 is sure-footed thanks to the broad track and sports chassis that has been lowered 20 millimetres. The new 18-inch alloy wheels specially developed for the new top model make a decisive contribution. The 225/40 tyres are approved for speeds up to 300 km/h.

Grand Challenge 2005 in the USA

Text and photo from Volkswagen AG.
Successful 200 mile test: Touareg prototype should master the US race for autonomous cars

Wolfsburg, 22 September 2005 - The countdown has begun for what is perhaps the world’s most unusual car race. On 8 October, a convoy of "intelligent" motor vehicles will set out to win or at least master the American "Grand Challenge 2005" – a 175 mile trip across the Southwest desert in the USA. The highlight: the cars will be setting off without a driver on board. Computers will do the thinking and steering. Volkswagen will be taking part in the race with a Touareg prototype. The Touareg, which has been built for the Grand Challenge by Volkswagen Group Research in cooperation with its California-based ERL (Electronic Research Laboratory) and Stanford University, has now covered a 200 mile distance autonomously during the latest tests in Arizona without any faults and at a competitive speed.

Volkswagen considers the successful test of both software and hardware over a track covered with potholes, waterholes and rocks to be an important step in the preparation for the Grand Challenge. The prototypes are also making important technology of the future a little more within reach. This is not about making the driver redundant, but innovative assistance systems will help to make driving even safer in the future. This technology has already begun its triumphant progress. Take the Passat for example. It is the first vehicle in the mid-class to have adaptive cruise control (ACC and stopping distance control), available as an option. This system recognises dangerous situations using radar measurements and pulls on the brakes as a precaution. Many of these new driver assistance systems which recognise and analyse the surroundings have been teamed together in the Grand Challenge Touareg. When combined, they can assess the route and any obstacles and steer a vehicle autonomously.

Volkswagen Research unleashed the Touareg prototype "Stanley" from driver control for the first time at the MOTOPARK Oschersleben off-road course on 17 June 2005. The "intelligent" four-wheel drive vehicle mastered the course with ease. The successful test drives in Arizona now reconfirm its performance potential.

In terms of basic technology, the off-road vehicle is almost the same as the series production model and has simply been modified with complete underbody protection and more powerful shock absorbers. However, Volkswagen Group Research has also transformed the Touareg into a mobile high-tech laboratory. Numerous sensors and a combination of four laser detectors obtain all the data needed for the driverless car to find its way both quickly and safely. The systems were supplemented with stereo visual display units, highly-developed 24-GHz radar equipment and an extremely accurate, satellite-supported GPS navigation system, which shows the exact location of the vehicle digitally to the exact millimetre.

This concentrated flow of information feeds the high-performance computer centre which is located in the off-road vehicle's luggage compartment and consists of seven interconnected Pentium M mother boards. Using 1.6 GHz processors and complex and unique software, it gives all the steering, acceleration and deceleration commands which then control "Stanley" electronically via “drive-by-wire” systems and can react to any special features of the route in real time.

The Grand Challenge 2005
The Grand Challenge project took place for the first time last year, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and with a prize of one million US dollars. This year the prize money will be two million US dollars. The Grand Challenge 2005 will start on 8 October and will travel across the difficult terrain of the Southwest desert in the United States. The vehicles taking part have a maximum of ten hours to complete a distance of 175 miles (around 282 kilometres) on a route which is not revealed until the start of the race. No form of outside intervention is allowed.

The Premium Mobile Telephone Provision in the New Passat

Text from Volkswagen AG.
The hands-free system where you can leave your mobile telephone in your pocket – All functions carried out via Bluetooth

Wolfsburg, 19 September 2005 - Using a hands-free telephone system has become easier and more convenient than ever before in the new Passat. The "Premium mobile telephone provision", which can now be ordered as an optional extra, offers all the convenience of a regular telephone. The system automatically accesses the functions of a mobile telephone via Bluetooth without the driver having to do anything.

The mobile telephone has to be registered once with the car telephone system via the Bluetooth interface. The system will then recognise the SIM card in the future when the ignition is switched on and will automatically make a connection to the mobile telephone. The main advantage: the mobile telephone does not have to be removed from a jacket or briefcase when the vehicle is in motion. A telephone fitted permanently in the vehicle will recognise the driver's mobile telephone and "borrows" all of the necessary data from the mobile telephone's SIM card. The mobile telephone will stop the GSM mode at the same time. This means that annoying adapter changes are no longer necessary.

The dual-band compatible telephone system is operated either via a convenient voice command function or using the multi-function steering wheel. Telephone numbers can be entered via the keypad which can be opened from the dashboard. An excellent level of speech recognition quality is achieved for the hands-free system thanks to a digital speech processor which has been adapted to suit the vehicle.

In contrast to other providers of car telephone systems with a Bluetooth interface, Volkswagen can offer the driver a fully-fledged telephone system with all convenience functions, such as call hold and conference. The driver can, in the multi-function display of the combi-instrument, read text messages, telephone book entries and call lists as well as access quick dial and ring tone settings. The best possible levels of reception are achieved through the use of the car antenna.

Volkswagen also offers, as an optional extra, the possibility to connect the mobile telephone to the vehicle electrics in a special compartment in the centre console in order to charge the battery. Furthermore, an information and breakdown call button are integrated in the roof console in case the driver requires information or the breakdown service of the Volkswagen Service call centre whilst on the road.

The new "Premium mobile telephone provision" for the Passat saloon and estate is of primary interest for frequent travellers and business people who regularly use the telephone in the car and have to be accessible. The "Premium mobile telephone provision" is available for 825 EUR for the Sportline and Highline packages or 875 EUR for Comfortline. If ordered with the optional "Business package", the price is 435 EUR (Sportline, Highline) or 485 EUR (Comfortline). Alternatively, the customer can order a standard hands-free telephone system for the new Passat generation. This costs 390 EUR for all equipment options.

Currently, nine mobile telephones from Nokia (Nokia 6230, 6230i, 6810, 6820, 6822, 7280, 6021, 8800, 9300) and five from Siemens (S65, SP65, SK65, CX75, M75) are compatible. The number of mobile telephones equipped with this function is increasing steadily. This means that even more mobile telephones will have this standard as the year continues.

The Passat
The new Passat has been available as a saloon since March of this year and as an estate since 19th August. The sixth generation of the Passat is available with the equipment options Trendline, Comfortline, Sportline and Highline. The basic version includes as standard ESP, Climatic, six airbags, electronic parking brake, electro-mechanical power-assisted steering, starting system "Press and Drive" as well as LED turn signals and rear lights. There is also a comprehensive package of optional extras, such as Climatronic, a DVD navigation system, the locking and starting system "Kessy", bi-xenon headlights with bend lighting and cornering lighting functions, an automatic distance control (ADC), a 250 watt Volkswagen sound system or a 600 watt high-end sound system from "Dynaudio" as well as a 230 volt Euro electric socket. In the Passat estate, there is also the electrically-operated tailgate, automatic level control system, an intelligent bicycle transport system and also a practical luggage management package. There are currently six engines available for the Passat. Jetta Takes First in MSN Auto's Cyber-Shoppers Top Ten

Text from MSN Auto.
The redesigned Volkswagen Jetta unseated the Honda Accord as the most popular vehicle on MSN Autos during the second quarter of 2005. Considerably larger than its predecessor, the Jetta features bold, new exterior styling as well as a host of new interior features.

The Honda Accord moves into the second position, followed by its smaller sibling, the Honda Civic. The Civic remains popular even in the last year of its current generation. The next-generation Civic is in showrooms in September.

No SUVs or trucks made the top ten during the last three months, which is likely a result of the increase in fuel prices. The first SUV is in the 11th position, and it is the Ford Escape Hybrid.

The list of the ten most popular vehicles MSN Autos is based on visits to the site's vehicle research pages during the second three months of 2005.

Main Points from Len Hunt's Alpha Driver Webcast

On September 7, Len Hunt appeared in a webcast exclusively for members of Volkswagen's Alpha Driver program. He answered a few questions submitted by members about the new Passat and other future models.

The first thing that was mentioned is the various launch dates for several Passat trim levels. Len Hunt has confirmed the following dates.

  • 3.6L is available at the end of October
  • 2.0T manual transmission available at November
  • 3.6L automatic with 4-motion available in early December
  • Passat Wagon 2.0T front drive and 3.6L front drive and 4-motion available February 2006
Len Hunt also mentioned that there are currently no plans for a Passat 2.0T with 4-motion.

The Eos has also been confirmed to be launched May of next year. The 5-door GTI can also be expected mid- to late-summer. Unfortunately, however, Len Hunt has confirmed that Volkswagen has dropped the Concept R from their product program. There are also no plans for a 7-seater Touraeg, specifically, although Volkswagen does have a plan for a 7-seater, mid-size SUV. Len Hunt also said that Volkswagen does realize the need for a vehicle in the entry-level segment and said that they are working on it.

One of the things also mentioned was that Volkswagen will be looking to the Alpha Driver members again for feedback regarding another model that will be based on the New Beetle Ragster that was revealed in Detroit. No other details were provided. Vague details were also provided but they also alluded to an R36. No word if it will be in a Golf or a Jetta but they definitely said they were working on one. Len Hunt did say that they want to expand the R series and that they are working on more R series vehicles. Len Hunt also alluded to a CRV sized SUV and a Passat-sized 4-door coupe.

When asked whether Volkswagen is considering to build a factory in the US, Len Hunt said that Volkswagen still wants to fully utilze the Puebla, Mexico factory, as well as other factories around the world and that they are not looking to the US for building another factory.

Among other things, Len Hunt also mentioned that Volkswagen is working hard with dealers to provide better service thorough the dealerships.

In Brief: The New Eos: World Premiere of the Convertible Coupé at the IAA 2005

Text and photos from Volkswagen AG.

WOLFSBURG, Germany - IAA world premiere: 18 months after the concept C study made its debut at the Geneva Automobile Salon, Volkswagen now presents the series version of its new convertible coupé in the form of the Eos. This is the world's first four-seater car with a five-section CSC roof; the folding hard top combines the characteristics of a coupé, sliding and convertible roof, thereby unifying three different car concepts to form a whole.
Consistently new design

CSC design: When closed, the CSC roof curves in an arc between the rear end and the windscreen, giving rise to an outstanding coupé roof which is both elegant and sporty. The roof's curve is elongated, the rear end muscular and the overall impression is one of high quality. When the roof is open, the 4.41 metre long and 1.79 metre wide Eos also clearly reveals that it has been specifically developed as a convertible coupé, and that its body concept has not been derived from any other model in existence. The CSC roof has enabled the windscreen frame to be kept short and the rear compact, lending the vehicle sensuous proportions in the style of a classic convertible.

CSC characteristics: The five-section CSC structure offers not only optical, but also practical advantages. Firstly, pure convertible feeling. As the windscreen frame – the roof cross member, to be perfectly accurate – projects far less into the interior than is the case with many similar solutions, there is nothing above the driver and front passenger but blue skies. Secondly, optimum entry and exiting. The shorter windscreen frame makes it easier to get into the Eos when the top is down, as the driver or passenger does not have to manoeuvre his head past the frame. Thirdly, the integrated glass/sliding/tilting roof, because the sun does not always shine, nor is it always summer. In such cases, the glass/sliding/tilting roof fitted in the Eos lets in light, air and good humour. Full opening and closing are very speedy, by the way, taking around 25 seconds from the first "clack" to the last "click". The system concludes the process with a signal tone, confirming that the roof is either open or closed completely. In addition, the CSC roof offers the general advantages of unimpeded suitability throughout the year and minimal driving noise when closed. It is also less appealing to vandals than a soft top. Of course, a roll-over protection system, which shoots out within a maximum of 0.25 seconds increases safety in critical situations.

Very wide and powerful

Dimensions: The convertible coupé is 1.79 metres wide, 4.41 metres long and 1.44 metres high. In relation to each other, these dimensions enhance the vehicle's dynamics. In comparison with its length and height, the vehicle's width lends the Eos a particularly powerful appearance. Its large track width (over 1.55 metres) not only looks good, it also contributes extensively towards the extraordinarily agile and safe handling characteristics exhibited by the Eos. The result is pure driving enjoyment regardless of whether the roof is up or down.

Scheduled for launch in spring 2006 above the New Beetle convertible
Market launch: The Eos is scheduled to be launched in Europe in spring 2006; the other continents are set to follow the same year. The car will open up a new sub-segment and will be positioned precisely between the A (Golf) and B class (Passat). In parallel, the New Beetle convertible, over 126,000 of which have been built and which underwent a facelift in 2005, will further extend its position as successor to the Golf convertible at the centre of the A class.

Engines: Volkswagen makes specific use of technical synergies between its model series. Take the engines, for example: In detail, these encompass four petrol engines with outputs ranging from 85 kW / 115 PS, 110 kW / 150 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS to 184 kW / 250 PS plus a 103 kW / 140 PS TDI equipped with a diesel particulate filter as standard. Four-cylinder direct injection engines are fitted to provide outputs up to 147 kW, whilst the 184 kW variant derives its power from six cylinders.

Sporty, elegant interior

Passenger compartment: The interior design is also new. Whilst the functional and operating details (e.g. light, air conditioning, radio systems) are familiar from other models, many fundamental Eos elements are new developments. These include the cockpit, the door and side trim panels and the rear seat system. Volkswagen is additionally fitting electrically activated easy-entry seats for the first time: These "remember" the driver's and front passenger's longitudinal seating positions, and return to these – once the rear passengers have entered or exited the vehicle – at the push of a button. When the roof is open, a volume of 205 litres is available; when closed, 380 litres of stowage space are on offer. As standard, a power latching system closes the boot lid the last few millimetres. A through-loading aperture is additionally integrated into the rear bench seat.

One equipment version, many equipment details

Equipment: The Eos will be launched in just one high-quality equipment version. Permanent details fitted as standard will include ESP, safety-optimised front headrests, front airbags and specially developed side head-thorax airbags; 16" alloy wheels (V6: 17"), air conditioning system (Climatic / V6: Climatronic)), fog lights, electric window lifters, ambient lighting, leather-covered steering wheel*, gear lever knob* and handbrake lever* plus sports seats* (* = standard as of 103 kW, optional extras for 85 kW). Optionally, innovative features such as a Dynaudio sound system with ten-channel amplifier, ten loudspeakers and 600 W output power or bi-xenon headlights with dynamic and static cornering lights will be available for the Eos.

Notes: All of the data and equipment contained in this press folder apply to the model range available in Germany. Deviations may arise in other countries. This information may be subject to modifications and errors. The terms FSI, TDI, DSG and CSC are trademarks registered to Volkswagen AG or other Volkswagen Group companies in Germany.

IAA 2005: Volkswagen Presents the New Eos

Text and photo from Volkswagen AG.
WOLFSBURG, Germany - Vast interest for the latest product from the house of Volkswagen: In front of nearly 1,000 journalists Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard unveiled the new Eos. In spring 2006 the new convertible coupé launches in Europe; available in all five continents.

Spectacular start of the IAA 2005: Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, executive chairman of the Volkswagen Brand, unveiled the new Eos in front of nearly 1,000 media representatives. Under a myriad of flashlights Dr. Bernhard drove on stage and opened the convertible roof to huge applause. The world premiere of the Eos was staged in a specially created sunflower field at the Volkswagen booth.

“The Eos is not a compromise, that can’t make up its mind on what it is all about. The Eos is both: a real convertible and a real coupe.” In his speech, Dr. Bernhard also announced a continuation of this year’s product offensive. By 2009 Volkswagen will bring five to ten entirely new models on the market „A dream come true with a perfect balance between price and performance in its segment.“

The Eos chassis concept was not built from a closed model but rather developed as its own independent convertible coupe. Essential technologies such as power train range (85 kW / 115 hp to 184 kW / 250 hp) and the chassis are based on the new Passat. The Eos will be available on the European market starting spring 2006; later that year the other continents will follow. In Germany the Eos starts at 25,950 Euros.

In Brief: 2005 Frankfurt International Motor Show

Text from Volkswagen AG.
WOLFSBURG, Germany - Volkswagen will present a series of new models including sixteen world and motor show premieres at the 61st International Motor Show in Frankfurt (IAA).
The highlights include the debut of the new Eos cabriolet/coupé, the Golf R32, the Golf GT TDI and the Golf GT and Touran with dual-turbocharged FSI engines (Twincharger).

The Twincharger engines, which are equipped with a turbocharger as well as a compressor for the Golf GT (125 kW) and Touran (103 kW), herald the beginning of a new generation of powerplants. Furthermore Volkswagen will present the Caddy EcoFuel and Touran EcoFuel that run on natural gas, a new version of the Multivan as well as the new top of the range versions of the Passat, Passat Estate, Phaeton and Touareg.

coupé Eos: The new Eos from Volkswagen is the world's first four-seater car to have a five-piece CSC roof, which combines the characteristics of a coupé, sliding and cabriolet roof. You will have fun all year round with this cabriolet/coupé thanks to its unique roof system, sporty driving properties and between 85 kW / 115 hp and 184 kW / 250 hp of power. (See the Eos press kit for further information.)

GT: Following on from the Golf R32 and the Golf GTI, Volkswagen will launch a third dynamic version of the most successful European car on the market, the Golf GT, at the end of 2005. It provides endless power in a double-pack. The new Golf GT comes with a dual-charged FSI engine - a world premiere - (Twincharger = turbocharger plus compressor) as well as the so far most powerful VW four-cylinder turbo diesel. Both engines deliver 125 kW / 170 hp. Characteristics: more performance, lower consumption. Let's take the Golf GT with the 1.4-litre 125-kW Twincharger engine, for example. Its four-cylinder engine is the most powerful in an all-new engine range. The Golf GT reaches 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds with this powerplant. Top speed: 220 km/h. Average consumption: 7.2 litres. For example, the Golf GT 2.0 TDI, which uses the latest piezo unit injector system and four-valve technology, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 220 km/h. Average consumption: 5.9 litres. The Golf GT models will be launched with their own individual styling and equipment.

Golf R32: The new Golf R32, the second generation of the most powerful Golf of all time, will be launched at the Frankfurt motor show. Again, it comes with permanent four-wheel drive, but now has a greater output of 184 kW / 250 hp. Like its predecessor, the new top of the range Golf also features its own distinct look and design. The Golf R32 has a maximum speed of 250 km/h and, as an alternative to a six speed manual gearbox, it is also available with a dual clutch gearbox (DSG). The “R32” then has even greater acceleration reaching 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds instead of 6.5. It will be launched at the end of September.

Beetle, New Beetle Cabriolet: The new generation of the New Beetle and New Beetle Cabriolet will make their motor show debut in Frankfurt. The distinguishing features include headlights, rear lights, bumpers and wings in the style of the New Beetle Ragster study presented at Detroit. The latest New Beetle represents an even stronger statement for people who like their car to reflect their attitude to life. More than 800,000 people drive the closed or open variations of the world's most famous and recognisable automotive design.

Jetta: Volkswagen is launching the new Jetta in Europe to tie in with the Frankfurt motor show. The fifth generation of the saloon also sees the company introduce a single name for all markets across the globe. In Germany / Europe, the Bora will therefore be called the Jetta again. It has more space to offer for long journeys than ever before. Compared with the Bora, the length of the new Jetta has grown around 18 centimetres to 4.55 metres. It also has an impressive 527-litre boot (a gain of 72 litres). This combination definitely works. In the USA, for example, the Jetta has managed to secure the position of best-selling car among all European manufacturers year after year. In Europe too, where sales have reached the 6.6 million mark, Volkswagen will now position the Jetta more as a sporty and elegant compact saloon like the US concept. The power ranges from 75 kW / 102 hp to 147 kW / 200 hp

Touran 1.4 TSI, 103 kW: The 125 kW / 170 hp Golf GT will not be the only dual-charged model in the future. The principle of “more power, lower consumption” will also take the Touran even further. A lower performance version delivering 103kW / 140 hp is on its way. In Germany, it will be launched in the 1st quarter of 2006.

Touran 2.0 TDI, 125 kW: While the 125 kW / 170 PS 2.0 litre TDI with piezo unit injector and diesel particulate filter as standard makes the Golf GT a sports car, it turns the Touran into a sports MPV. Its four-cylinder turbo delivers powerful acceleration. The international premiere of the Touran 2.0 TDI will also be at the IAA. This TDI is, of course, also available with the dual clutch gearbox (DSG). On sale from December.

EcoFuel / Caddy EcoFuel and Caddy Life Colour Concept: From 2006, the successful Touran and Caddy ranges will include natural gas versions. The 80 kW / 109 hp multi-talents will also be able to run on petrol. During exclusive gas operation, the range of the Caddy is approx. 430 kilometres and of the Touran approx. 310 kilometres. After that, you can drive on with petrol or stop at one of Germany's around 650 natural gas garages. The four natural gas tanks have been integrated as under-floor solutions in the rear section (Caddy: 26 kg; Touran: 18 kg). If you prefer conventional drives, but still want an unconventional car, we recommend the Caddy Life Colour Concept. The exterior and interior of the spacious compact van for young families are not just colourful, they have exclusive equipment details like 15-inch alloy wheels as well as leather steering wheels, gearstick knob and handbrake lever.

USB interface: In future, Volkswagen will offer an interface for a USB stick/player in the Golf, Golf Plus, Jetta and Touran. You will therefore be able play MP3 and other file formats on the standard audio system. It is then operated with the buttons that are usually used for the CD changer on the radio.

Passat / Passat Variant 3.2 FSI V6 4MOTION: As of the fourth quarter of 2005, a newly developed 3,169 cm3 V6 engine will be available for the Passat and Passat Estate. It delivers 184 kW /250 hp and develops a maximum torque of 330 Newton metres. The six cylinder uses direct fuel injection (FSI) and accelerates the Passat 3.2 V6 FSI to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds (estate: 7.2 seconds). Top speed: 246 km/h (estate: 243 km/h). The top of the range models, which come with the DSG double-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive (4MOTION), have an average consumption of 9.8 and 10.0 litres (estate) every hundred kilometres.

Multivan “Sport Edition”: The Multivan “Sport Edition” is another world premiere. Its emphatically design-orientated equipment includes Xenon headlights, sports suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, interior décor applications of brushed aluminium and exclusive two-coloured leather seats. The Sport Edition comes with the five-cylinder TDI (96 kW / 131 hp and 128 kW / 174 hp) or the V6 engine (173 kW / 235 hp).

Phaeton W12 / Touareg W12 Executive: The Volkswagen range covers a performance spectrum of 40 kW / 55 hp in the Fox up to - from now on - 331 kW / 450 hp in the Phaeton and Touareg. The performance of the new Phaeton W12 has been increased with modifications to the engine by 22 kW / 30 hp. At the same time, the maximum torque has been increased from 550 to 560 Newton metres and is now available from 2,750 instead of 3,000 rpm as before. The overall effect is an even smoother delivery of power. The new Touareg W12 Executive is just as powerful. Alongside the Touareg W12 Sport is the world's only twelve-cylinder off-roader. In terms of technology and features, the powertrain on this exceptional SUV with its maximum torque of 600 Newton metres is unrivalled by any other vehicle in this segment.

Technology Park: In addition to its innovative new cars like the Eos cabriolet/coupé, the dynamic Golf GT and the highly economical Touran EcoFuel, Volkswagen will be presenting a range of exciting technologies from today, tomorrow and the future at the 61st International Motor Show in Frankfurt. In hall 3.0, Europe's biggest car brand has reserved 1,100 m2 of its 5,300 m2 fair booth for the Technology Park. This section features its own special design. The six subject areas of engines, gearboxes, chassis, comfort, electronics and drive and fuel strategy provide an insight into the work of Volkswagen's Research and Development department merging the present with the future. The technology ranges from the latest Twincharger engine for the Golf GT and the diesel particulate filter to CCS combustion technology. Incidentally, this autumn, Volkswagen will start a widescale retrofit campaign for over six million diesel vehicles. CCS (Combined Combustion System) is a combustion method that combines the advantages of diesel and petrol engines and could become an important engine concept for the coming decades.

Important: All data and equipment mentioned in this press kit applies to the model range offered in Germany. Models for other countries may differ. Modifications and errors excepted. The terms FSI, TDI, DSG and CSC are registered trademarks of Volkswagen AG or other Volkswagen Group companies in Germany.

Volkswagen Connected: New Eos, Golf R32, and Other Frankfurt Premieres Play Music USB Sticks

Text from Volkswagen AG.
- Plug in, drive away and enjoy: Take thousands of songs with you using pocket mass storage media

WOLFSBURG, Germany - The opening of the International Motor Show in Frankfurt is just a few days away. Volkswagen will bring endless driving fun with the world premiere of the Eos coupé/cabriolet, the new R32, which is the most powerful production Golf ever, and other models.

These new cars have a universal USB connection onboard: This interface allows you to control storage media like sticks and players, which can hold several thousand music tracks, with the car radio.

Volkswagen is the first carmaker to offer this modern feature for a broad product range: We will start with the Golf, Golf Plus and Touran and then next year USB connections will be available for other models. For the first time, you will be able to integrate all common mass storage media in your car. You can simply plug USB sticks into the built-in console in the centre armrest to play audio files. The radio will recognise the memory as soon as you select the CD drive as the source. Larger USB players can be connected with a cable.

Up to six music folders can be displayed as CDs one to six on the radio or navigation system screen. Any information that has been stored for the music files – for example, the number of the song and the timer – will be displayed. The scan, search and shuffle functions can be selected using the radio buttons as you would for CDs.

When you switch the radio off, the track being played will be stopped and will then continue when you turn it back on. The supported formats include MP3, of course.

Volkswagen Individual has also come up with a solution for iPods. There is a connection in the compartment under the centre armrest for devices from the computer manufacturer Apple. The new preparation for USB storage media can be ordered from December as an alternative to the CD changer for the Golf, Golf Plus and Touran. The prices for both system preparations start at 195 euros.

Volkswagen Engine Campaign at Frankfurt Motor Show

Text from Volkswagen AG.
- New petrol engines for the Golf and Touran with reduced consumption and increased performance

- New natural gas versions of Touran and Caddy cover 100 kilometres for €4.50 on average

WOLFSBURG, Germany - “A substantial reduction in consumption together with an equally substantial increase in performance” – the ideal petrol engine was just a dream until now.

At the Frankfurt International Motor Show, Volkswagen will present a new generation of engines that meets both of these requirements. The formula: direct injection (FSI) plus turbocharger and compressor. This highly efficient combination of technology will make its debut in the new Golf GT. Key data: 170 hp, 7.2 litres consumption. A 140-hp version will then follow in the Touran. Two other Frankfurt motor show premieres from Volkswagen, the Touran and the Caddy EcoFuel, can get by without conventional fuel. They run on economical natural gas.

Golf GT with 125-kW Twincharger: This dual-turbocharged FSI engine – the Twincharger – combines the advantages of a turbo diesel with those of a petrol engine. A mechanical compressor as well as a turbocharger generate maximum power and torque combined with low consumption values. Boasting a mere 1.4 litres, the engine develops 125 kW / 170 hp and a maximum torque of 240 Newton metres (from 1,750 rpm). This engine allows the Golf GT to reach a top speed of 220 km/h. It races to the 100-km/h mark in just 7.9 seconds.

The new “Twincharger” is an impressive example of how Volkswagen’s FSI technology (direct petrol injection) can be developed further to provide driving fun and improve efficiency. The powerful boost provided by the compressor in the low rev ranges is amazing. At higher rev ranges, the turbocharger then takes over supercharging. The Twincharger achieves the torque development of a large naturally aspirated engine, but with considerably lower consumption values.

Touran with 103-kW Twincharger: The 125-kW / 170-hp Golf GT is not the only model to feature a turbocharger combined with a compressor. The principle of “more power, minimum consumption” will also take the Touran even further — namely in a lower performance version delivering 103kW / 140 hp. In Germany, it will be launched in the 1st quarter of 2006.

Touran EcoFuel / Caddy EcoFuel: From the beginning of 2006, natural gas-powered versions of the successful Touran and Caddy models delivering 80 kW / 109 hp will also be available. When running on natural gas, the Caddy has a range of approx. 430 kilometres, the Touran approx. 310 kilometres. The vehicles can be driven with petrol, but that is mainly intended as a “reserve”. The four natural gas tanks have been integrated as under-floor solutions in the tail end (Caddy: 26 kg; Touran: 18 kg). Both models therefore still have the same boot volume and full flexibility.

The Touran EcoFuel consumes just 5.9 kg of natural gas every 100 kilometres, the Caddy EcoFuel 6.0 kg. One kilogram of natural gas currently costs 0.75 cents in Germany. These two Volkswagen’s can therefore cover 100 kilometres for around €4.50. That is unbeatable value. By the end of the year, around 700 natural gas garages (1,000 even by 2007) will supply this low-cost fuel. Numerous energy suppliers and communities are also subsidising the purchase of natural gas cars.

Note: Volkswagen’s press conference at the Frankfurt motor show with the unveiling of the new Eos cabriolet/coupé by the Volkswagen brand chairman, Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, will be held on 12 September at 11 a.m. in hall 3.0.

Volkswagen Gets in the Hybrid Game

Text from Expatica.
WOLFSBURG, GERMANY - In a week dominated by new ventures to create fuel-saving hybrid engines, Volkswagen signed an agreement Thursday to develop its own version mainly in Shanghai in cooperation with Chinese partner SAIC.

The car would come to market in time for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, the Wolfsburg-based auto manufacturer said.

The new power train will initially be built into a Shanghai-built Touran, a van version of VW's mass-market Golf.

Hybrids combine a petrol engine with battery-driven electric motors. Hybrids save fuel mainly because the engine needs a smaller power reserve and can run more efficiently at constant revolutions.

VW's Wolfsburg research centre, SAIC in Shanghai and the city's Tongji University will all be involved in the project. The memorandum of understanding was signed in Wolfsburg.

On Wednesday, BMW announced it was joining a consortium with DaimlerChrysler and General Motors to develop hybrids in Troy, Michigan. Earlier, two major German suppliers, Continental and ZF Friedrichshafen, said they would jointly develop a hybrid engine.

High oil prices improve the chances of hybrids coming into wide use, a study Thursday by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said. It predicted there would be 74 hybrid models worldwide by 2010.

The best-selling current hybrid, the Toyota Prius, has been held back by the fact that the price premium is not repaid by the fuel savings.

FRANKFURT, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Volkswagen will work without partners to develop its own hybrid engine technology for the U.S. and European markets, Europe's biggest carmaker said on Thursday.

A new project with its Chinese joint venture partner Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC) will develop hybrid technology solely for the Chinese market, a VW spokesman said.

King Kong Climbs to the IAA

Volkswagen presents special model Touareg "Kong" and the latest from Peter Jackson's film "King Kong" at the IAA.

WOLFSBURG, Germany - What started as an online exclusive in June with the first King Kong trailer is now being continued at the Frankfurt Auto Show IAA.

Volkswagen will be showing further exclusive material from the set of King Kong in New Zeeland at a stand which has been inspired by Skull Island.

Furthermore, Volkswagen will be presenting a Touareg special model "Kong" at this year's IAA – a real power package both inside and out which can take on its namesake. “The film and the creature itself fit very well to this SUV with its off-road capabilities and ability to move confidently from rugged jungle outposts to city streets,” says Joern Hinrichs, Head of Volkswagen Global Marketing.

Underscoring its wild character are visible cues such as floor-guards front and rear, side skirts and a comprehensive chrome package. Identification as the official member of the King Kong crew will be provided by a specially developed badge. The Touareg will be presented wrapped into ropes – an allusion to the tied up sacrificed white woman in the movie.

An unusual advertising campaign has been devised for the Touareg and the stand: large adverts which show Kong in action at central locations in Frankfurt, such as the Bockenheimer Warte, the old library in the Schöne Aussicht and around the trade fair.

And subject to availability of his shooting schedule, actor Thomas Kretschmann is planning to visit the stand. He plays the role of Captain Englehorn, who brings King Kong to New York on his ship, Venture, in Jackson’s film.

With the extravagant construction of the stand and the extraordinary advertising campaign throughout Frankfurt, Volkswagen has started the second stage of cooperation with NBC Universal for King Kong. "But it gets even better," Jörn Hinrichs, happily explains "the advert for the special model with scenes from the film is also being produced by Peter Jackson’s Weta Productions in New Zeeland. That’s something really special."

Pischetsrieder: Reduction in labour cost unavoidable

Text from Volkswagen AG.
Works meeting in Wolfsburg – Economic conditions remain difficult.

Wolfsburg, 05 September 2005 - Despite rising sales, the Volkswagen Group still has overcapacity. “In view of global competitive pressure, we need far-reaching cost reductions in all areas. That also applies to labour cost,” said the Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder, at a works meeting in Wolfsburg on Monday. He stated that the Board of Management had put together a package of measures to that end.

Pischetsrieder said the Group had succeeded in increasing sales this year thanks to new models. The company was, however, still operating in a difficult economic environment and in stagnating, in some cases even declining, markets. The international automobile industry was suffering from considerable overcapacity. As a result, competitive pressure would intensify further.

“We have made quite substantial headway with our ForMotion program and the Product Workshops. Nevertheless, we cannot avoid reducing labour cost, either by lowering costs per employee or by employing fewer people, or by a combination of both,” said Pischetsrieder. What was important was the ability to serve growth markets profitably from German plants. That was not only a question of labour cost, but this factor must at least be competitive in Germany, and thus in Wolfsburg.

There was no doubt that the Wolfsburg plant needed the new compact SUV. However, the vehicle must be economically realizable. Under the plant agreement, though, precisely this economic viability was not possible at the present time. This was the background to the recommendation by the Product Strategy Committee to build the SUV in Portugal.

Pischetsrieder said that negotiations to secure the jobs for building the Touareg’s smaller sibling in Wolfsburg were nevertheless continuing. This was an important decision for the site. However, it would not alter the fact that Volkswagen had surplus manpower of the order of several thousand employees at its German sites, in particular Wolfsburg.

This surplus must be cut back within the framework of the present collective agreement. Pischetsrieder cited an extension of the partial retirement program as one specific measure, although that on its own would not be sufficient. In addition, Volkswagen would be offering individual employees termination packages. “These measures apply to employees in all areas, including senior management.”

Despite this decision, Pischetsrieder confirmed the present profit forecast. The ForMotion target of 3.1 billion Euro would be reached and there would be a year-on-year improvement in both operating profit after special items and profit before tax in 2005.
