Scirocco purported to come in topless flavour, too

The Scirocco hasn't even been released and already speculation on a convertible version is already on the loose. Auto Express claims to have the inside scoop on a convertible variant of the yet-to-be-released Scirocco for a 2009 market entry. Both flavours are expected to be a toned down version of the Iroc Concept from the Paris Motor Show in 2006 and be built off of the Eos platform, though rear seats are likely to be ditched in order to make more room for cargo and the hard or soft top roof. That gives strong indication for a convertible version of the Scirocco. The Scirocco is expected on roads next year.

Volkswagen wants to be world's largest by 2015

Wow. Talk about lofty ambitions. Volkswagen has just announced that they plan on toppling Toyota as the world's largest car manufacturer by 2015. The news was confirmed by Michael Kern, head of sales and marketing for the Volkswagen brand. Kern added that they plan to beat Toyota in both sales and profitability by 2015. Earlier this year, Toyota overtook General Motors as the world's top auto seller.

So how exactly will Volkswagen go about it's goal? Kern says that Volkswagen will begin by launching 12 new vehicles in the next three years. The Up! is sure to be one (or two or three) of the 12. Kern has also saying that Volkswagen will be expanding its presence in key markets such as the US, Russia, and India. Of course, Porsche's experience wouldn't hurt either.

If Volkswagen hopes to take the lead, they will need to do more than just come out with 12 new models. They will need to focus on reliability, pricing, and finding their place in the industry. No more of this upmarket business. Pricing is a major issue, especially here in North America where Volkswagen's prices are usually higher than the competition's. If they can tackle all these things in the next 8 years (that's how long they have until their goal), then it wouldn't be too far fetched for Volkswagen to overtake Toyota.

In other news, Volkswagen has just posted it's largest month-on-month increase in its entire history. Volkswagen and it's other brands posted a 12% increase in August of 2007 as compared to August 2006. Slowly but surely, it seems, Volkswagen will reach its goal.

More Up! goodness for Japan and LA

When Volkswagen, or any car maker, comes out with a concept, you always have wonder if that concept will somehow, down the line, make it into a production model. The Up! that was unveiled last week is no different. But if we should go by what Martin Winterkorn says, then we are in for a pleasant surprise.

First, Winterkorn reveals that variants of the Up! concept will show up in the Tokyo Motor Show next month and in the LA Motor Show in November. As to what the variants will involve, he did not elaborate. We're thinking maybe a sedan and a hybrid version. But really, it could be anything.

This really says a lot. Winterkorn already said that green light for the up! is possible. But considering that variations on the theme is already being planned, that must mean that production is an unconfirmed definite.

Mexico bombings halt Volkswagen's plant operations

Volkswagen's manufacturing operations in Mexico had to be suspended after a series of recent bombings targeted natural gas pipelines. The natural gas pipelines are essential in powering equipment in Volkswagen's plants. The attacks, carried out by a rebel group in the state of Veracruz called the Popular Revolutionary Army, also suspended operations for Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, and Honda.

Volkswagen will have to remain closed at least until Pemex, the local oil company, can get the pipelines back up. Pemex expects to have them up and running sometime between Sunday and Monday. Until then, however, Volkswagen plants will remain closed.

Karmann unveils one-off Polo convertible at Frankfurt

It seems logical that if one model in Volkswagen's lineup should receive a convertible version, it should be the Polo. Apparently, Karmann thinks so, too. That's why they have unveiled a Polo GTI convertible at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Now, before you get too excited, this, as it stands, is a one-off concept. Production is not planned, or at least, not yet.

Called Polo GTI Cabrio, the sample in the Frankfurt show was white with a red cloth roof (the cloth roof also has a glass sliding sun roof), as well as red and black accents all over the car. It actually looks very appealing and is a great fit for the Polo line up. Should this make production, it would be a hit and a great alternative to the New Beetle Convertible.

-Concept car 2007: Large amounts of space, comfort and safety in the VW Polo
-Compact car convertible with glass sliding roof and illuminated headliner

Convertible cars are still in the automotive manufacturers' spotlight. Above all, in the small and compact car sector, Retractable Hardtops (RHT) have the advantage. Meanwhile, with the Volkswagen Polo at this year's IAA, Karmann is presenting a soft top convertible, that is setting new standards concerning safety, comfort and flexibility in roof construction: A soft top with a glass sliding roof, an illuminated internal headliner, foldable back seats and a wide-opening tailgate are the highlights.

The principal feature of the innovative flexibility incorporated in this convertible is the Cabrio Overhead Protection System (COPS). The rollover bar does more than just provide occupants with highly effective protection in the event of the car rolling over. COPS means the manufacturers have also been able to get rid of cumbersome body structures with their rigid rear bench seats and small tailgates which have prevented the seats from being folded down in the past. The soft top with z-folding fabric roof comes without soft top box lid and linkage flaps. The top of the roof replaces the soft top cover. The soft top is optimized by the largest possible interior. A deep trunk sill and in particular the innovative rear window mechanism create an unusually large trunk area opening.

To open the tailgate, the window is raised slightly and slides upwards over the fabric cover. The trunk opening aperture thereby gains an additional 30 cm. To close the trunk area, a roller blind lowers automatically and shields the hood area from prying eyes. At the same time, the roller blind also serves as a variable soft top stow. Furthermore, the rear window acts as an additional trunk area opening for small objects. Light pressure on the lower part of the VW logo opens the 30 cm high window independently from the tailgate.

Flexible storage options for large items of luggage or bulky objects is possible thanks to COPS. The modular roll bar system with a U-shaped bracket creates a generous trunk opening aperture. Compared with conventional solutions, weight is reduced. The rear seating position can be unlocked and folded down. The headrests are secured to the roll bar and tilt to prevent them from interfering with the seat-folding action. The convertible's trunk area can be used almost as flexible as a standard passenger car model. The trunk area capacity is 148 liters with the soft top open and 304 liters with the roof closed. The convertible's trunk area is therefore 34 liters bigger than the one of the standard model.

Seating comfort and easy access

The removal of bulky frame structures also increases the seating comfort in the rear. In order to facilitate access to the rear seats for the passengers, the concept vehicle is equipped with the "Easy Entry" function and the rear windows open automatically when entering and leaving the car.

Compared with the standard vehicle, the Karmann engineers have completely overhauled the car bodyshell. The rear has been lengthened by approximately 130 mm. The convertible Polo has also grown by 40 mm in width. The youthful and sporty appearance of the VW Polo convertible has been topped off by design details in the front and rear sections such as the centrally-positioned double exhaust.

"The fabric cover has real advantages compared to the fixed folding roofs," says Peter Harbig, Chairman of the Board of Management. Less weight means less fuel consumption. The reduced space requirements for cover storage means there is a greater trunk volume. The soft top also leaves considerably more room for new designs. Harbig: "We are looking forward to seeing the public's reaction in Frankfurt."

Alongside Karmann, Yokohama tires with the product Parada 215/40 R17 and OZ Germany with the product Michelangelo 10 / 7.5) have been actively participating in the development of the concept vehicle.

Tiguan SUV officially unveiled in Frankfurt

Volkswagen officially unveiled the Tiguan at this year's Frankfurt show and with it, some new information. There isn't really anything that we didn't know already. For example, we already knew more or less the trim levels the Tiguan will come in. Turns out, we only knew two of the three trims. The "Trend & Fun" and "Sports & Style" will outfit the Tiguan specifically for road use. Basically, don't try traversing rocks on these two models. The other, the "Track & Field" is more for off-roading and gets that higher approach angle of 28 degrees, ten more than the other two. The "Track & Field" also receives driver aids that help when off-roading. All Tiguan trim levels are available with 4Motion.

The Volkswagen claims that the Tiguan is the first SUV with a completely "charged" (according to the press release) engine lineup. What that basically means is that all engine choices are either turbocharged or turbo and supercharged, which helps in fuel efficiency and emissions. There are three TSI engines that ranges from 150 hp to 200 hp and two TDI engines of 140 hp and 170 hp. The engines can be paired with either a manual or DSG.

Some notable features include Park Assist, which debuted in the Touran. Park Assist allows you to park the car without actually parking the car. You simply find a space, activate the system and it automatically calculates how much to turn the car to get it perfectly in the spot. All you have to do is determine how fast to go with the gas pedal. The Tiguan also features Volkswagen's new RNS 510 navigation unit which, among other things, feature a 30 GB hard drive for your media, an off-road feature, and a back up camera. A panorama sunroof is available.

It is important to note that most of these features are for the Euro spec Tiguan. But we may be seeing some key features trickle on down to the North American market when it comes out next year. Europe, which can expect it next year, can expect it earlier that us.

Tiguan sets new standards with its high level of driving dynamics

Driving-active Tiguan redefines interface between SUV and car

First Volkswagen with fully charged engines without exception

New and quiet common rail TDIs already fulfill Euro-5 emissions standard

Maximum trailer load of 2,500 kilograms marks best value in its segment

Wolfsburg, 11. September 2007. Volkswagen is showing the new Tiguan in a world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. This “small brother” of the Touareg can be recommended to all those car drivers who enjoy the individual visual appearance and versatility of a SUV, but also expect a premium level of comfort, agility and variability. Its chassis sets new standards in the world of SUVs, because i t is extremely driving-active and safe. All five engines – for the first time on the global SUV market all engines are charged without exception – already deliver, powerful propulsion just above the idling speed. Today, the completely new and very quiet common rail TDIs already satisfy the Euro-5 standard that does not go into effect until 2009. Upon request, the Tiguan can be parked nearly automatically in the urban jungle by the Park Assist feature. Off-road, on the other hand, the latest radio-navigation system (RNS 510) navigates its occupants back to civilization using its off-road function. Meanwhile, with up to 1,510 liters of cargo space, the Tiguan exhibits van qualities. 2,500 kilograms of trailer load also define the absolute best value in the Tiguan segment.

Trend&Fun and Sport&Style as clever and agile all-round talents

Very intentionally, Tiguan – offered in the equipment versions Trend&Fun, Sport&Style and Track&Field – is being offered in two body variants: The Trend&Fun and Sport&Style versions were specifically designed for primarily on-road use. Their agile, safe and highly comfortable driving behaviors are equal to those of a car. At the same time, these Tiguans do not shy away from either off-road drives or trailer loads. They leave the really rock-tough off-road routes to the Tiguan Track&Field.

Track&Field for more serious off-road duty

The Tiguan Track&Field was specially designed for life off of the asphalted trails. Different than the Trend&Fun and Sport&Style versions, this especially adventure-friendly Tiguan exhibits a more extreme entry angle (28 instead of 18 degrees; maximum angle without the vehicle impacting the trail in front). As standard equipment the Tiguan Track&Field also has a newly developed off-road mode that awakens an entire armada of assistance systems to make drives off-road especially safe.

First SUV in the world exclusively with charged engines

As already outlines, the Tiguan is the first SUV in the world to be offered exclusively with charged engines. The advantage of engine charging: More power, less fuel consumption and lower emissions. Take the example of the gasoline engines: There will be three new TSIs – direct injection engines with turbocharging or turbocharging plus supercharging. The four cylinders deliver 110 kW / 150 PS, 125 kW / 170 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS. Take the example of the diesel: A completely redeveloped generation of noticeably quieter common rail four cylinder engines is being employed here. The two TDIs output 103 kW / 140 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS and smash the Euro-5 emissions standard.

Full-time 4MOTION all-wheel drive and two six-speed gearboxes

Full-time all-wheel drive is absolutely essential off-road. On paved streets an intelligent all-wheel drive also improves active safety. In the Tiguan the latest generation of 4MOTION all-wheel drive is used. It is shifted by manual, or optionally automatic, six-speed transmissions. Both transmissions satisfy special off-road requirements. The manual transmission can be driven at an engine speed of 1,000 rpm or vehicle speed of just 6.69 km/h, for example; this practically equals the crawler gear of a reduction gearbox. The automatic transmission has gear level preselect; in off-road use it prevents shifting to the next higher gear.

A SUV interior with the variability of a van

The Tiguan is an all-round talent. This characterization not only describes its powertrain properties, but also the multivariable and very spacious interior. The rear bench seat is split with a 60:40 ratio, it can be adjusted 16 centimeters in the longitudinal direction, and the rear seatback has multiple tilt adjustment settings. This provides either more legroom in the rear or additional space in the cargo area. Available as an option is a double cargo f loor including cargo management system. Also standard on the Tiguan Track&Field and Sport&Style is a folding front passenger seat so that very long objects can be stowed. With regard to the seat position, the passengers travel exceptionally comfortably, not only in front but also in the rear. The reason: Similar to the case in a movie theater, rear passenger seating is a bit higher and therefore more relaxed.

The Tiguan parks independently and finds the way back from the desert all by itself

On board an SUV for the first time is the Park Assist feature, with which the Tiguan turns into a parking space nearly automatically and impressively. The off-road mode already mentioned is a technology show; no other SUV in the world can call upon such a network of safety systems off-road at the press of a button. The Tiguan also exhibits its mastery when it comes to trailer load: It may range up to 2,500 kilograms, which is handled by the new, swiveling trailer hitch. In a class by themselves are the touchscreen radio and navigation systems; the top model (RNS 510) offers a standard 30 gigabyte hard disk memory, an off-road navigation mode and rearview camera. Any of the passengers can also look through a panorama sunroof at the sky of the savannah or the city.

To the point – IAA 2007: BlueMotion Offensive

Update: added image gallery (at the end of the press release)

-Advanced technologies for sustained mobility

-Six new BlueMotion models in one stroke: Golf, Golf Plus, Golf Variant, Jetta, Touran, Caddy all debut as BlueMotion at the IAA

-BlueMotion as environmental badge: Affordable VW technologies reduce CO2 emissions

Wolfsburg, 11 September 2007 - Volkswagen is dramatically expanding the range of its especially environmentally friendly BlueMotion models. After the Polo BlueMotion – the world’s most economical five-seater –, the Passat BlueMotion and Passat Variant BlueMotion, the company is simultaneously introducing six new models at this year’s IAA in Frankfurt that carry BlueMotion technology which is as economical as it is environmentally friendly and affordable:
The Golf, Golf Plus, Golf Variant, Jetta, Touran and the near-production concept car Caddy BlueMotion. This means that starting in 2008, Volkswagen will be offering a model with the successful BlueMotion environmental badge in nearly every one of its model series. Together they have the potential, in Germany alone, of saving four million liters of fuel and 10,600 metric tons of CO2 annually.

Most economical Golf of all times. A highlight anticipated by many car drivers is the new Golf BlueMotion. With just 4.5 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers, its fuel consumption has been reduced by 0.6 liter compared to the predecessor model – a reduction of almost twelve percent. Analogously, CO2 emissions were also reduced by 135 g/km to just 119 g/km now; a top result for a vehicle of its size.

Clean, practical, economical. Extremely low fuel consumption values are also exhibited by the Golf Variant BlueMotion (4.6 l / 100 km; 122 g/km CO2), the Golf Plus BlueMotion (4.8 l / 100 km; 127 g/km CO2), Jetta BlueMotion (4.6 l / 100 km; 122 g/km CO2), Touran BlueMotion (5.5 l / 100 km; 146 g / km CO2) and the concept car Caddy BlueMotion (5.8 l / 100 km; 154 g/km CO2). They are all powered by an efficient TDI that outputs 77 kW / 105 PS. Always included as standard equipment: The particulate filter.

BlueMotion advances to become quality seal for preservation of resources

The name BlueMotion not only refers to the automobile, its fuel economy and emissions, but comprehensively to the whole brand. Blue – the corporate color of Volkswagen stands for the elements to be protected, water and air. Motion – embodies the aspect of forward, future-directed mobility. The goal is to protect the earth’s resources for future generations. Within just one and a half years, BlueMotion has advanced to become a quality seal for economy without compromises in driving fun.

At the same time, the BlueMotion offensive is a continuation of a decade-long tradition in engines at Volkswagen. At the latest since the first Golf D – which revolutionized the compact class in 1976 with its self-igniting diesel – the brand has acted as an innovator in the field of economical diesel engines. Other milestones were the special Formula-E models from the early 1980s and the cutting-edge Lupo 3L TDI, the first full-fledged three-liter production vehicle in the world. Today, the Polo BlueMotion has taken up a leadership position. With fuel consumption of only 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers and 99 g/km CO2 emissions it is the most economical five-seater on the world market.

Volkwagen previews up! day before Frankfurt show

Volkswagen decided to give us a sneak peak at the new up! just a day before the Frankfurt Motor Show begins. The up! is distinct with it's rear-mounted engine; a first for Volkswagen for many years since the original Beetle.

It's surprisingly a very dynamic design for such a small car. It doesn't appear too tall for its 136 inch by 64 inch frame. It has very interesting details, such as the Volkswagen badge in the rear that serves as the third brake light. The short front and rear overhangs not only gives the car a dynamic look, it also improves interior space. Speaking of the interior, the up! has a very sparse one. No clutter of buttons or dials on the dash. Everything is controlled through the seven-inch screen that utilizes a new interface system. It does seat only four with adequate luggage up front.

Nothing in the official press release talked about possibility of production. However, Martin Winterkorn gave strong indication to the fact during his presentation. He says that the up! could be marketed globally through the Volkswagen, Skoda, and SEAT brands. The press release, however, does mention that the up! could be the start of a whole line of vehicles

"Volkswagen reinvents the Volkswagen" is the heading in the press release. At face value, that little saying probably means that Volkswagen has reinvented a classic (the Beetle) but, if we look deeper, could Volkswagen really be talking about themselves? Could the up! be a sign of things to come at Volkswagen? Only time will tell.

So while we wait, check out the press release and more images after the jump.

IAA 2007 / up! / VOLKSWAGEN /
World premiere: Volkswagen up! concept car with rear engine
Multivariable: City specialist offers more space, more variability and more fun

Wolfsburg, September 2007. There are cars that endure for all times. They are icons of their type, masterpieces of craftsmanship and technology; they put ideas into motion, make progress tangible and sometimes quite simply make everyday life better, more practical and enjoyable. Many of these cars carry the VW logo. “Bug, Beetle, New Beetle”, “T1, Bulli, Samba bus, California”, “Golf, GTI”. Now Volkswagen is presenting – as a world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt – a concept car that once again has the right stuff needed to move more than just one generation. It is a small, pure and high-spirited Volkswagen that pays tribute to its environment. The overall concept is marked by an innovative, clear, intuitive functionality. The name of the concept car: up! – a positive name that is a synonym for departure, activity, dynamics and the future. “For Volkswagen”, says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member with Responsibility for Technical Development, “the response of IAA visitors will be a decisive test to determine whether the concept has the same kind of potential possessed by the Beetle at one time or by the Golf today.”

Concept

The up! is a city specialist, a car for four persons and all languages, for the job, the university, the drive to the beach and the excursion outside the city gates. A small car that shows a lot of size, because it offers more space than any other car of similar length (3.45 meters) and width (1.63 meters). Its engine – conceivable here are all facets of technology that can be sensibly applied – will run in the rear. And that changes everything: Space, mood and design. Walter de Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen group, sums it up like this: “The up! is not a car whose form will become obsolete within a very brief period of time. It shines in its cleverness and yet is made with loving care. And so the up! is a clear and strong statement for future Volkswagen design.” Furthermore, the team of designers and engineers has envisioned the up! concept car as the first member of an entire model line; other facets are entirely conceivable.

Ralf-Gerhard Willner, Director of Concept Development, has final responsibility for the technical layout of the up! He and Walter de Silva had already achieved a new balance in the mutual interaction between form and function at Volkswagen before the start of the project. “Absolute harmony of the basic technological concept and the emotional aspects of the design”, note Willner and de Silva in unison, “can only be achieved in a hard clash of ideas between engineers and designers. That is the only way to produce icons.” That is precisely why the up! is not your run-of-the-mill, small, tightly packed car, but instead is a clever, innovative whole. Its form is pure. It just had to look like this, no other look would do. There is nothing superfluous, and its functionality – and so also its design – speak for themselves. Simultaneously– and this is typical of Volkswagen – uncompromisingly attention was given to refining every line and every surface until we had created a friendly and masterful car.

Exterior design

The fact that the engine of the up! runs in the rear has a decisive influence on its exterior design. That is because the up! has no classic radiator grille. It forges links to the Beetle. This fact alone gives it a great deal of independence. Dominant design characteristics are the headlamps that take an inward and diagonal line, between them the horizontally arranged air vents, the VW logo (as one of the few details kept in chrome), the tailgate that extends far forward and the smooth bumper with a circumferential black stripe as a detail of the “happy face” that is typical of Volkswagen.

In many areas, technology and design have melded into a vehicle architecture that is not only appealing, but is also very utilitarian. The rear end of the up! is a good example of this. The tailgate was produced using a transparent material. Under this gate developers also integrated the high layout of the taillights. Another feature that is technically and visually new is the location of the VW logo in the tailgate; it is also located behind glass and illuminates when the light is on. The rear bumper was designed to match the “happy face” in front.

The powerful appearance of the up!, despite all of its compactness, is emphasized by a very wide track width (1.42 meters) relative to vehicle width. The wheels are flush with the sporty outboard wheel arches and side skirts. The radial design of the wheels and surfaces extending right up to the edge of the rim make the 18-inch wheels appear significantly larger than they actually are.

The wheels that are arranged far outboard in the bumper areas reduce body overhangs to a minimum. All of these features are part of an unmistakable side profile with a very long roof arch as well as clear and large surfaces. Giving shape to its style here are the large doors and the lateral window surfaces, which incline sharply upward at the height of the rear wheel arch and thereby help to form the very independent C-pillar design.

Interior design

Mounting the engine in the rear opened up entirely new interior concepts. Relative to its exterior size, the space offering is exceptionally forward-thinking. The same is true of its variability: Except for the driver’s seat, all other seats can be folded and removed. Since they are designed as light shells, they can be quickly stowed in one of the cargo areas – besides the front trunk there is also one in the rear – to free up space. Afterwards, the entire passenger compartment length can be utilized as a storage area for especially bulky objects.

To achieve the high level of seating comfort that is usual at Volkswagen, besides their ergonomic design, in the case of the up! this level of comfort is also attained by a simple yet very effective trick: Similar to a self-inflating air mattress, air can be sucked out of the seat surfaces via a valve. This means that the seats can be adjusted 1:1 to the body anatomies of the occupants who have just taken a seat.

Intuitive controls
On its up! concept car, Volkswagen is presenting some completely new solutions when it comes to operator controls. Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer for the Volkswagen Brand, comments on this: “Another reason the up! is so fascinating is because everything, every detail, was thought out anew. In the interior we have a touch screen with new proximity sensor technology for controlling the navigation, radio, trip computer and climate control systems. It is operated absolutely intuitively. As a result, the most complicated functions can be controlled like child’s play.”

The up! has two central displays. In the cockpit, a 8-inch monitor shows the driver key information such as vehicle speed, fuel level and range, as well as momentary CO2 emissions.

In the center of the instruments – equally easy for driver and front passenger to see and control – an 7-inch monitor shows the way that future human-machine interfaces will look and operate. Here all conceivable functions can be controlled via the mentioned touch screen, which also reacts via proximity sensor to gestures, i.e. specific hand movements.

Menuing was restocked and reorganized so that people without computer science educations would be able to operate the system. The developers intentionally separated “display” and “control” levels from one another. Always shown on the screen is a control bar with standard functions such as climate control or audio volume control. Developers packaged functions of other higher-order systems – navigation, telephone, radio, images, movies, etc. – on a display level that has been referred to internally as the “main menu carousel” – a type of virtual carousel. It consists of the icons of different system functions (telephone, navigation, etc.). When the user touches the “main menu carousel” it can be rotated by touch screen. Visually, this control is just as spectacular as it is intuitive. When the desired function appears on the main menu carousel – such as the telephone – all the user needs to do is move his or her hand to the display to switch over to the telephone menu, thanks to proximity sensor technology. The new type of user control is fun, easy to understand in any cultural environment and very safe. That is precisely what is typical of Volkswagen.

Volkswagen to launch new slogan at Frankfurt

For a few years now, Volkswagen's slogan almost everywhere else in the world save North America has been "Aus liebe zum automobil" or the English version of "For the love of the People's Car". Now, it seems Volkswagen has grown tired of this old slogan and is said to be readying a new one to be presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show (which is next week!).

Some have said that the new slogan will be "Volkswagen - Das Auto" which translates to "Volkswagen - The Car". Personally, that's not much of a slogan. Unless, of course, the "The" has an inflection denoting Volkswagens as the car. You know what I mean? Of course, nothing has been set in stone until we hear it (or don't hear it) straight from Volkswagen.

In any case, watch out for this at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show this coming week.

IAA under the Sign of the Caddy: World premieres of the Maxi and BlueMotion

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles at IAA Frankfurt Show 2007 will have three (four if you count the already debuted California NoLimit) World Debuts.

The most important release from VWCV is the Caddy Life BlueMotion Studie that only drinks 5.7L of diesel per 100km/h and also has a diesel particulate filter that cuts the CO2 rating from 167g/km to 149 g/km.

This is all due to some enhancements under the skin to the aerodynamics, gearbox and engine.

I wont bore you with the rest of the debuts I'll let you click the post for yourself and found out what VWCV have to offer, Enjoy.

Press Release follows....

-Caddy debuts in Frankfurt as extended Maxi and with new 140 PS TDI

-Caddy BlueMotion concept vehicle with 105 PS TDI now consumes just 5.7 liters of diesel

-New: Multivan PanAmericana and California NoLimit

Hannover, September 2007. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is presenting two world premieres at the International Motor show (IAA) in Frankfurt: The new Caddy Maxi and the near-production Caddy BlueMotion concept vehicle. The Caddy Maxi was lengthened by 47 centimeters making it the new crossover between the “classic” Caddy and the “T5”. The Caddy BlueMotion shines with its fuel consumption of just 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Also on display for the first time in the world in a production version at the IAA: The all-wheel drive Multivan PanAmericana and the California No Limit

World premiere 1: The new Caddy Maxi. It merges the qualities of a delivery van with the versatility of a compact van to form a new commercial vehicle class. Compared to the familiar Caddy, the Maxi was lengthened from 4.41 meters to 4.88 meters. This has created a space wonder with up to 4,200 liters cargo space. This Volkswagen will be available at the end of 2007 in the Caddy Maxi Life version; at the beginning of 2008 it will be followed by the Caddy Maxi Kombi and Caddy Maxi Van. A new top engine will make its way onto the new Volkswagen commercial vehicle: A powerful 103 kW / 140 PS TDI.

World premiere 2: The near-production Caddy BlueMotion concept vehicle is being presented by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as an extremely economical and environmentally friendly model. The rated fuel consumption of the Caddy BlueMotion, powered by a 77 kW / 105 PS strong TDI with standard diesel particulate filter, was reduced by 0.6 liter to 5.7 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers by applying numerous technical and aerodynamic design measures. This value corresponds to a CO2 emissions value of 149 g/km (reduction of 18 g/km).

World premiere 3: The all-wheel drive Multivan PanAmericana was designed for very big adventures. It is reminiscent of the approx. 23,000 kilometer long route from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego – also known as the Panamericana. In 1999, another all-wheel drive Multivan covered this stretch in a record time of just 15 days. The entire equipment package of the Multivan PanAmericana was customized for these types of adventures. The model has underbody shielding as standard equipment, for example. As an option, the new model can also be ordered with a chassis set 50 millimeter higher and shorter gear ratios.

The California, one of the most popular camper vans in Europe, is entering the starting gates once again with a limited and particularly well-equipped “NoLimit” version. Total production run: 222 vehicles. Exterior identifying characteristics: White paint, 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome accents and tinted windows from the B pillars. Upgrades to the interior include a combination of leather and Alcantara upholstery on seats and beds. Exclusive features such as a mobile 10-inch monitor with integrated DVD player and DVB-T receiver as well as an iPod (30 GB) are standard equipment, as are a DVD navigation system and bi-xenon headlamps.

It's official: Volkswagen is moving

Weeks of speculation has been confirmed when Volkswagen officially announced today that they will be moving their US operations' headquarters from Auburn Hills, Michigan to Herndon, Virginia. Aside from Volkswagen of America, Audi of America, Audi Financial Services, and Volkswagen Credit will all be packing their bags as well.

And while they're moving, Volkswagen will also be doing some restructuring. Currently, Volkswagen employs some 1,400 employees. They plan to reduce that number by eliminating 400 positions once they are established in Herndon. Another 400 positions will be moved to the Herndon HQ and new hires and contractors will fill up the remaining positions. The Auburn Hills operations will remain, however, but will only be a fraction of what it used to be. Only 300 positions and the same number of contractors will remain in Auburn Hills. Stefan Jacoby, newly appointed president of Volkswagen of America justified the restructuring as a way of having "fewer redundancies, less bureaucracy" while having "more creativity and more openness".

Stefan Jacoby, who assumes his position this month has worked out a five-pillar strategy for getting the US operations back to making money, focusing on product, brand positioning, dealer network, organization, and the possibility of manufacturing vehicles in the US suited for the US market. "A premium will be put on connecting more with customers," Jacoby said and added that more focus will be put on producing US-specific models in the future. With the Euro steadily growing stronger against the US dollar, Volkswagen has had to consider reopening a factory in the US after almost 30 years. No specific plans, however, were released along with this announcement.

This move can be considered a last-ditch effort. If this fails, then there's only one option left. Hopefully, this move instead fosters a renaissance for Volkswagen in North America.

Press release is after the jump.

AUBURN HILLS, MICH.— Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced that as part of its new strategic direction, the Company will relocate its U.S. corporate headquarters to Virginia and also streamline and restructure its U.S. operations. The new business strategy will bring Volkswagen of America, with its brands, Volkswagen and Audi, closer to customers, increase competitiveness, and achieve sharper focus on key markets.

Volkswagen of America, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, the world’s fourth largest automaker, will begin the transition from its current location in Auburn Hills, Michigan to Herndon, Virginia in April 2008. The new 185,000-square-foot facility is expected to be fully occupied by the end of 2008, and it will house the U.S. headquarters for Volkswagen of America, Inc. It will also include the U.S. headquarters for Audi of America, Inc., Audi Financial Services, Volkswagen Credit and other affiliated operations.

The Company’s total workforce at its current headquarters is roughly 1,400. Of these, 800 are full-time employees and 600 are contractors or employees of service providers are assigned to the Company. As a result of the relocation and realignment:

* Approximately 400 positions will be transferred to Northern Virginia (new headquarters)
* Positions at the new headquarters will be filled with employees who relocate, and new hires
* 300 full-time positions and 300 contractors or service providers will remain in Oakland County (current headquarters)
* Approximately 400 positions will be eliminated

“With these changes, Volkswagen of America drives the future,” said Stefan Jacoby, incoming President and CEO of Volkswagen of America. “It reflects a major new commitment to achieving our Company’s goals in the world’s largest car market. We are excited about moving our headquarters to Northern Virginia, where we will be closer to key markets and customers.”

Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, added, “We are strongly focused on the U.S. market. This is a top priority for our Company, and we are confident that under Stefan’s leadership, we will continue to serve our current U.S. customers well and add many new customers.

“Our excitement is tempered by the fact that we need to reduce our workforce overall and by the realization that this does not come as good news in Michigan. However, we will remain a member of the Auburn Hills community, where we will continue to house certain key business activities and retain a workforce of approximately 600 people,” said Jacoby. “These changes are necessary to allow Volkswagen of America to meet the needs of our customers and remain competitive in the U.S. market. We must undertake an aggressive new direction in this market and these are critical first steps.”

Relocation
Volkswagen of America will add approximately 400 jobs to the Northern Virginia region.

“Volkswagen’s decision for Virginia is a strong affirmation of the Commonwealth’s business-friendly environment, location, market access and infrastructure,” said Governor Timothy Kaine. “The caliber of companies already located in the region and the proximity to Dulles International Airport were huge factors in the company’s decision."

Volkswagen of America received an attractive, comprehensive incentive program for the relocation that includes $6 million in cash-grants from Governor Kaine's office.

Restructuring
Volkswagen of America has already taken steps to reduce its workforce through attrition, early retirement offers, and voluntary separations. Further reductions will occur as a result of organizational realignment associated with the move. Additionally, approximately 600 employees and contractors will stay in Oakland County, Michigan, to support a variety of functions, including important financial and technical operations.

“We need fewer redundancies, less bureaucracy, more creativity, and more openness. Moving and streamlining our operations give us an opportunity to naturally transform the business so we can compete successfully in the U.S. market and better serve our customers,” added Jacoby. “We want to connect with our customers better, and these changes will help us do that.”

Strategic Direction
Jacoby was named Volkswagen of America President and CEO in June of this year, and takes up his responsibilities this month. His extensive experience with Volkswagen AG in global markets includes a prior assignment in the United States, as well as senior positions in the Controlling, and Sales and Marketing areas for Volkswagen. He was head of Controlling in Japan in the early 1990s, and had responsibility for the Asia-Pacific Region in the late ‘90s, where he was instrumental in bringing about the further expansion of two Volkswagen joint ventures in China. Most recently, Jacoby was executive vice president of the Volkswagen Group, responsible for sales and markets worldwide. Jacoby will reside in the United States and work from the Company’s new headquarters in Herndon.

Jacoby said he will implement a new strategy that includes five pillars: product, brand positioning, dealer network, organization and, ultimately, the possibility of local production. A premium will be put on connecting more with customers, and fostering a culture of fresh ideas and bold thinking. Additionally, the Company will focus efforts on producing more cars designed specifically with the U.S. market in mind.

“This move and new corporate strategy will benefit our employees, our dealers, and our customers. Market conditions and business strategy 30 years ago dictated we move to Michigan; today they dictate we move to Virginia,” said Jacoby. “With this move and with our new corporate strategy, Volkswagen of America drives the future.”

Volkswagen's cute 'ute plays rough

Many people have nicknamed Volkswagen's Tiguan compact SUV "baby Touareg" because it looks just like a Touareg only in a smaller package. But it seems the Tiguan has also inherited the Touareg's off-road capabilities as well. Though not marketed as a full fledged off-roading SUV, this video proves that the Tiguan is ready for anything that may come its way.

It is important to note that the Tiguan pictured is equipped with the Track and Field package, giving it, among other things, a higher approach angle of 28 degrees.

Thanks for the tip, Patrick!

Caddy Maxi – World premiere at the IAA Frankfurt 2007

Here is the new Caddy Maxi which is 47cm longer in the wheelbase and offers 7 seats with space for the most rearward passengers and luggage, more than current Caddy Life offers by Volkswagen Commerical Vehicles.

Caddy Maxi Life the MPV version will be released first in the Autumn (Spring for Southern Hemisphere readers) with three engines: Petrol 1.6 producing 75kW/100hp, Diesel 1.9 TDI producing 77kW/103hp and new to Caddy family 2.0 TDI producing 103kW/140hp.

The Commercial version of Caddy Maxi in Panel Van and Kombi guises will be released early next year.

The new Caddy Maxi is apart of a new family of products that VWCV hope will help it gain sales of 600,000 unit per year by 2010.

Press Release follows jump.

Caddy Maxi – World premiere at the IAA with an extra 47 centimetres Large. Larger. Maxi. Space for seven people plus luggage

Caddy Maxi fills the gap between the Caddy and the T5
Hanover, 4 September 2007. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is celebrating a new Caddy dimension at the 2007 International Motor Show (IAA) for passenger cars. The Caddy Maxi Life. The new vehicle combines the qualities of a transporter with the versatility of a compact people carrier in a new class of vehicle.
Compared to the familiar Caddy, the Maxi has been stretched from 4.41 metres to 4.88 metres. This has created an amazingly spacious vehicle with up to 4,200 litres of stowage volume (in the panel van version). Moreover, the multitalent is equipped with a new top-of-the-range engine: a TDI that generates 103 kW of output and 320 newton-metres of torque.

Stretched by 47 centimetres, the Caddy Maxi is one of the largest models among the compact shuttle vehicles and small transporters. Load capacity up to 4.2 m3, 800 kilograms payload, 1,500 kilograms trailer load and load area up to 2,250 millimetres long, depending on the interior configuration. These are record figures in this segment. Alternatively there is space for seven people to be carried in maximum comfort.

The design of the Caddy has been adapted 1:1 for the Caddy Maxi. The major difference is the body, which has been lengthened by 470 to exactly 4,875 millimetres. Compared to the 4,405 millimetre long "standard version" of the Caddy, the growth can be broken down as follows: plus 151 millimetres rear overhang; plus 319 millimetres between the sliding doors and the rear axle. The wheelbase has grown to 3,002 millimetres.

A major factor in the great success of the Caddy is its variable, clearly structured interior with its sophisticated design. For this reason, the space concept was transposed unchanged onto the Caddy Maxi. The seats and the cockpit area, which has been recognised as being of very high quality, are also identical.

In this case, not only the driver and front passenger are able to enjoy outstanding comfort and generous space, but also the five passengers in the two rows of seats in the rear. Even getting into to the Caddy is comfortable. The reason for this is the 700 millimetre wide and 1,108 millimetre high sliding doors. In addition, especially for the new Caddy Maxi, the space between the second and third rows of seats has been increased by 50 millimetres. Even when all seven seats are occupied, the luggage compartment still has a volume of 380 litres. The second row of seats can be folded down and forward. The third row of seats can be removed completely with just a few simple steps. The load volume is then increased to 1,350 litres.

The Caddy Maxi Life has been specially tailored to carry up to seven people and their luggage with a maximum of comfort in three rows of seats (2/3/2). Characteristic equipment on the Caddy Maxi Life includes two practical sliding doors and bumpers and attachments painted in the colour of the body. In the interior, the full trim and numerous stowage nets gives the Caddy Maxi Life an especially sophisticated and elegant feel.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will offer the Caddy Maxi with one petrol and two diesel engines. The petrol engine generates an output of 75 kW. The two TDI engines are characterised by even more power and superb economy. Here, the 2.0 litre TDI with 103 kW is new in the range. As in the past, the tried and tested 1.9 TDI with 77 kW represents the entry level in the world of diesel. It may be combined with the optional dual clutch gearbox DSG. A diesel particulate filter comes as standard with both TDI engines.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will offer three equipment versions of the Caddy Maxi. These are specially tailored to the needs of the respective clientele. The Caddy Maxi Life, in the style of a people carrier, will hit the market from autumn 2007. This will be followed in early 2008 by the universal talent, the Caddy Maxi Kombi and the Caddy Maxi Kasten panel van, which is designed for commercial use.

Volkswagen of America purportedly moving to The District

Reports are now coming in that claims Volkswagen is about to announce that it will be moving it's American unit from it's current home of Auburn Hills, Michigan to Washington, DC. Rumours had been going around for months that the move would indeed occur. The move will include all of Volkswagen's units including Audi and Bentley.

Insiders say the move is motivated by a need of a new perspective and Volkswagen plans to do this by controlling a bloated workforce. Some of Volkswagen's employees are said to have the "wrong sort of mindset required to shift directions". Volkswagen hopes to drop some of these people along the way.

One ex-Volkswagen executive (who we can only guess to be this man) said that the move to Washington, DC, or to another place for that matter, will not work until Wolfsburg changes the way it regards the American market. Volkswagen has had a history of neglecting specific American needs, instead insisting on treating the market no differently than Europe. But Wolfsburg has realized the intricacies of the American market and is constructing a product plan specially tailored for the US.

Volkswagen is expected to make the announcement official in a press conference this Thursay.

Volkswagen and Carbonfund.org joins together to offset your carbon footprint

Volkswagen is teaming up with Carbonfund.org to help you reduce your carbon footprint. For every Volkswagen vehicle purchased from September 1, 2007 until January 2, 2008, a carbon offset program will be included. Though the press release is lacking in finer detail about exactly how the program will work, it looks like Volkswagen will be using part of what you paid for your car to put toward Carbonfund.org's reforestation in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV). The LMAV, which has been largely converted into agricultural farm land, will benefit from the reforestation project by maintaining local ecosystems.

This announcement is just a small part in Volkswagen's grand plan to help reduce emissions. And although it would have been nice to use this as a platform to launch Volkswagen's other green initiative here in the North America, it is still a good effort on Volkswagen's part to actively help the environment.

For more information, read the press release after the break. To calculate your car's carbon footprint, check out Carbonfund.org.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that they have partnered with Carbonfund.org to offset one year of carbon emission from each new Volkswagen vehicle sold in the United States from September 1, 2007 through January 2, 2008.

“We developed this partnership to help bring our customers to the forefront of environmental initiatives,” said Adrian Hallmark, executive vice president, Volkswagen of America. “Vehicles are an important and necessary part of our society, but there are actions we can all take to help ensure a cleaner environment for future generations.”

Hallmark added, “We hope that Volkswagen’s investment will serve as a catalyst to involve our owners and create awareness beyond our defined contribution.”

Working with Carbonfund.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding solutions to climate change, Volkswagen plans to reforest land in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) in Northern Louisiana, a wetland ecosystem that had been largely converted to farmland. The total carbon reduction is estimated at more than 372,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the planting of over 250,000 native trees in the Volkswagen Forest. Not only does this program help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere but it also restores native trees to habitat, provides food for local wildlife, reclaims barren pastureland and increases water security.

“Carbonfund.org is a non-profit organization supporting renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects globally that reduce carbon dioxide emissions and the threat of climate change. We are proud of this new partnership with Volkswagen of America, which is the first time a car company and its community of owners have mobilized on this scale to offset carbon emissions and reduce their climate footprint,” Eric Carlson, executive director of Carbonfund.org.

Reforestation is a form of carbon sequestration, which captures and removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere – trees use CO2 and store it in the trees’ mass and in the soil. The climate, soils, and growing conditions in the LMAV result in carbon absorption rates that are among the highest of any region in the United States: 450 tons of carbon dioxide per acre, compared to 170 tons per acre in comparable projects world wide.

In addition to this carbon offset program and the upcoming Jetta TDI Clean Diesel, Volkswagen has also partnered with Carbonfund.org to offset carbon emissions at a vehicle test drive program at the Teva Mountain Games and for an upcoming Clean Diesel marketing Tour. The tour is designed to educate consumers about the advantages of Clean Diesel and Volkswagen’s alternative fuel strategy.
